Spiritual Self-Care Tips For A Stress-free Holiday

meditation-picture-id452584597 SIX SPIRITUAL SELF-CARE TIPS

The beautiful contradiction of the holiday season is this: We have an internal longing for peace, reflection, and harmony… yet our calendar (and our families!) often can send us in the opposite direction! As a result, holiday anxiety is a real thing this time of year.

The gap between our expectations (“We need this to be the best December ever!”) and our reality (“What? We can’t have the annual Ugly Holiday Sweater party, my mother is still haranguing me about my partner, and our company is looking at layoffs?!?! Happy f’ing Hanu-Kwan-Mas!”) can create even MORE drama and stress.

It’s easy to feel like we’re failing, or we’re not enough, or that life (and our jobs, and our families, and our friends, and our cooking, and well, everything) just sucks.

As I got older, as genuine loss and tragedy accompanied many of my family’s holiday events, we sat down with a good helping of sorrow, loss, fighting, and booze passed around the table like a bowl full of mashed potatoes (accompanied with a nice ladle of guilt and shame!). We wanted to create something different, but we just didn’t know-how. Outer conditions told us what our life meant. We didn’t know about the tools we needed to create an inner shift that would allow us to show up differently for each other.

The more stressed we are emotionally and physically, the more likely we’re going to fall into old patterns of behavior and thinking. That’s why it’s critical that you take time, push the pause button, and find nurturing ways for managing holiday stress.

How To Practice Gratitude By Journaling!

notebook-with-i-am-grateful-for-in-handwritten-text-picture-id1203067809 Make gratitude journaling a regular part of your self-care practice

I know, I know… you’ve heard everyone from Oprah to Gwyneth sing the praises of practicing gratitude and the importance of creating a gratitude journal.

But do these kinds of trendy approaches really work? You bet your sweet mystical pirate booty they do!

You know I love my “woo,” but I also want to ground everything in the practical. If it ain’t working, I ain’t wasting my time on it… which is why I can say with complete confidence that gratitude journaling is one of the most beneficial habits you can develop if you want more blessings, more magic, and more miracles in your life.

New Moon Intention Journaling!

woman-writing-journal-at-window-seat-in-coffee-shop-picture-id518033322 NEW MOON INTENTION SETTING

New moon alert!

STOP what you’re doing…

DROP your pen onto the page…

And ROLL out those soul-deep intentions!

With the moon moving into Scorpio on Nov. 15, there’s no better time to set big, gorgeous New Moon intentions. And there’s no better way to dive deep and create certainty around those New Moon intentions than by journaling!

Today, I’m going to talk a bit about the power of the New Moon for intention-setting and manifestation, what the New Moon in Scorpio means for us collectively, and how we can take advantage of this unique window of opportunity.

NEW MOON INTENTION SETTING

The first 48 hours of a New Moon is a window when our creative energy is at its pinnacle.

New Moons have two powerful days, the day of and the day after, where setting intentions are most powerful. That means we’re able to effortlessly embrace our role as co-manifestor with the Universe.

The Dark Moon (the night before the New Moon) provides us a perfect time to contemplate, meditate, and decide upon the intentions we want to see take root and flourish.

Healing The Fear Virus With Compassion!

be-of-those-who-lend-a-hand-where-they-can-picture-id894377512

When the whole Coronavirus stuff started to go down earlier this year, I noticed how another virus was spreading even faster than COVID: The fear virus. Fear was taking root and spreading around the globe faster than the speed of light.

Fear is contagious. And it’s easy to make it the enemy. But fear shouldn’t be viewed as the enemy itself.

In fact, I believe that when we make choices out of fear, we’re making choices to protect ourselves and those we love. It comes from a desire for self-preservation. Fear can be important. We need some level of an alarm system to keep us out of harm’s way.

Fear brings a message with it.

We can’t ignore it — because ignoring it simply buries the emotions. We can’t bypass it — because we have a lot of collective trauma that needs to be addressed and healed. I invite you to see fear as a valuable piece of information. Throw out the concept that you shouldn’t feel fear. At its core, fear is actually friendly. Fear wants to protect us, and is a biologically-rooted system that’s working on our behalf 24/7 to warn us of possible threats to our life. It’s trying to keep us safe and alive.

But we also don’t want to give in to it or give it more power than it warrants.

Your Part In The Global Symphony!

globalmusic

The other day, I came across the most moving video that I’ve seen in a long time. It’s called the Virtual Choir from Eric Whitacre, and the premise is simple: One man pulls together over 17,000 separate voices from 129 different countries in one single piece of music.

When I heard the voices blending, melding, lifting each other up in song and harmony, I couldn’t hold the tears back. “This is how it’s supposed to be!” I said to myself. “This is what Life is all about.”

Here’s their Virtual Choir 6:

Surrender To The Mystery!!

surrendertomystery Surrender To The Mystery!!

There’s so much going on right now that is impossible for us to comprehend.

Movements are taking place around us – but on planes we can’t readily access (and we’re not talking airplanes although I sure wish I could hop on one to see my friends.) Transitions, opportunities, alignments… but it’s outside our reach. Yet we long so desperately to understand!

How can we surrender to the mystery?

Here’s the deal: We can’t truly “get” what’s happening around us because the web of creation is so vast, so much more complex, so much more intricate than we could ever begin to grasp!

That’s hard for us, in our human state, to accept. (It kinda reminds me of when I was a little kid sitting at the adults’ table and the conversation went right over my head). We want to take part, to listen and to be heard… but we can’t exactly follow the train of thought! So we’re left grabbing little bits and pieces and getting frustrated because it doesn’t all fit together in a nice pretty package we can put in our pocket.

10 Ways To Stay Grounded

woman-doing-yoga-at-the-beach-picture-id1177568976-1 Ideas to help you calm and ground your energy

Change is in the air… On a societal level, on a natural level, and — based on what I’ve been hearing from my students and community — on a personal level as well.

The “nothing is as it was before” feeling we’ve been dealing with for what seems like a lifetime has collided with the natural rhythms of life and the Universe. In the northern hemisphere, we’re well into the fall season, a time full of transformation. Kids are back to school in some way, shape or form (hugs and blessings on parents and teachers as you navigate the ever-changing landscape of education!). And even though we’re developing creative ways to celebrate, holidays are upon us.

During this period, it’s essential to maintain your equilibrium. The earth is turning, but you can plant your feet firmly and enjoy the ride!

To help you reconnect with yourself and the world around you, here are 10 ways to stay grounded.

Who's Really In Charge?

relax-and-go-back-to-nature-yoga-at-night-solo-traveler-a-cheerful-picture-id1258126268

The other day, I woke up early and took my coffee out to our deck where I could just sit in silence with my dogs, letting emotions and thoughts wash over me. Lately, I’ve found myself pulled in different directions at once, and the tension has left me a bit (okay, a lot!) overwhelmed at times with so much going on around us.

I see the challenges of the larger world we live in — the pain, the struggles, the imperfections — and part of me gets sucked into grief and sadness. But at the same time, I see the beauty that surrounds us: People standing up for each other and using their voices to lift each other up, the natural artistry of the changing seasons, and the Divine love that weaves through and connects us all, from the largest mountain to the smallest blade of grass or speck of pollen. It’s all connected, yet we seem so separate at times!

The Magic of 11:11!

1111 The Magic of 11:11!

As long as I can remember, the number 11:11 seems to show up just when I need a dose of guidance, or as a way to make me pay special attention to what’s going on around me. I’ve considered it as a “butterfly kiss” from Spirit, a message that I’m loved and cared for. It’s so fun to see the creative and playful ways that Spirit can communicate with us, and this has always been one of my favorites throughout my life.

As I’ve shared many times before, my teen years were fraught with angst, stress, and anxiety (for me and my family!). This period was very difficult for me in large part because I could sense I was different from others, but I had no way of processing the strong emotions, prescient dreams, or intuitive “hits” I would get. Many of those intuitive episodes were preceded by periods where 11:11 would show up everywhere from clocks to the combination on my locker. At the time, I noticed the pattern, but I thought it was simply coincidence, not synchronicity.

A Bigger Vision

female-having-a-glimpse-in-to-the-future-picture-id157332879 There’s not one area of our lives that has been unaffected by the events of 2020

Right now, life around is nowhere near what we imagined it would be. The amount of change we’ve all been asked (forced?!) to navigate is staggering.

When we’ve been hit with as much as we have on a collective level, it’s easy for our minds to go to negative places, focusing on all that’s been taken from us. And the list is long! There’s not one area of our lives that has been unaffected by the events of 2020. I talk to many friends who are dealing with heavy feelings of grief, and some days I feel it too. It’s tempting to fall into the gap between what I desire and what exists.

want to be on vacation… I am stuck at home.

want to send the kids back to school… I am homeschooling 6 hours a day in addition to handling my full-time job.

want my friends and family to be happy and healthy… I am dealing with health issues and strained relationships.

want a world of equality and justice… I am seeing the places where that’s not the truth.

Whew! It’s exhausting to try to hold the disparities in our minds and hearts, and it can make you question your role as a co-creator of your experience. (I don’t know about you, but a pandemic, racial strife, and a worldwide economic meltdown weren’t on my 2020 requested playlist, or vision board).

Course Correction From The Universe!

Course Correction From The Universe! Can we find the lesson or meaning in the tough times?

Think back to the last time you had your heart set on something — a job that’s perfect for you, a new apartment in the building you’ve had your eye on, the Caribbean cruise you’ve been planning for months — only to see it evaporate in front of your eyes. Someone else (with less experience) gets the job. The apartment sells before you can even make a phone call. Your trip gets canceled because of bad weather.

No matter how “zen” you might consider yourself, it can be hard to not feel disappointed and let down when your dream bubble is burst into one big cloud of “WTF?!”

But have you ever then found out later that your sidetrack actually led you to something better — or at least helped you avoid a nasty situation? The new company ends up going bankrupt… you found a better apartment a month later at a lower price… the refund for your canceled trip gave you a cushion in your bank account that you ended up needing for car repairs.

Sometimes It's About The Questions, Not The Answers!

empty-swing-at-the-park-picture-id1213877125 Sometimes It's About The Questions, Not The Answers!

It is so natural to want concrete answers in life. Back when I was making my living doing private readings, that’s what most people came to me for: Directions, guidance, and ANSWERS. “Will so-and-so ask me to marry him? How will this business deal work out? When is my kid/mom/uncle/partner ever gonna straighten out their life??, When is he coming back?”

Boy, do I understand. Especially with so much uncertainty these days, everyone wants to know: “When will coronavirus get under control? Should I quit my job? Is my relationship with so-and-so gonna last when we can’t see each other?”

As humans, we have a natural desire for certainty. But that desire often handcuffs us, keeping us locked into a single way of seeing the world. There is so much more that Spirit has in store for us, but we can’t see it because we are so tied to our reality.

That’s why before we can talk about getting answers, we have to talk about asking the right questions.

My Summer Reading List

female-reading-and-enjoying-sunset-on-beach-by-the-ocean-picture-id933846814 My Summer Reading List

August 9th was Book Lovers Day, which I missed because I wanted to write about the loss of my friend Doug. This week, I wanted to share some books I have read that have impacted me this year both non-fiction and fiction.

I read about 30 new books a year (for real!) and a couple of years ago I made a commitment to read more books by BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, & People of Color) authors. I mean, the way to really understand any subject is to become educated. I think we can also learn not only from non-fiction factual books, but also books that teach us about other people through fictional stories that can capture the emotions and experiences of people specifically from marginalized and oppressed communities. Stories can help create greater empathy, care, and understanding and I know we need more of that especially during these difficult days that are so painfully strife with division and hatred. Reading also requires discernment, which is why I read a lot from different perspectives.

So, I know you may think my bedside table is piled high with paranormal romances (which I love) and books on quantum physics (guilty pleasure—yep I am weird) BUT there’s more to my summer reading than lovestruck vampires (though I do make time for those. Hey, it’s summer!). I am constantly looking for ways to increase my understanding of how I can help heal the injustice that some of our brothers and sisters face on a daily basis.

Here are my top ten books I’ve been reading to gain a better understanding of the issues and what I can do to help create a more equitable world for all of us. Oh, and by the way, I’m sharing this with you from my heart. Nothing is perfect—this is a process. I’m learning more every day, because for me, this is a lifetime commitment. Not just a trending topic.

I am starting with five non-fiction books then five fiction books. Some will be surprising!

Shine On Behalf Of The Divine

misty-forest-with-sunlight-picture-id686149666 Shine On Behalf Of The Divine

I’m still coming down off the gratitude cloud from last weekend’s OraclePalooza Virtual, and equally swimming in the searing truth of my best friend Doug’s crossing over the rainbow bridge a few short weeks ago. The entire weekend I was in two places as I stepped into one of many “firsts” without him. Being my wingman and emcee at OraclePalooza was the thing he loved best. It was strange to be without him although it was an important new beginning and I felt his spirit the entire time.

I miss the brave, real, loving human though. In the flesh with me backstage eating gluten-free snacks and giggling about how lucky we were to do what we did, and him crying reminding me that not everyone’s stuff was for me to take on. God, I love that man. What a pair we were.

Doug was with me for 16 deep meaningful and fun years of friendship, but what made it special is that we shared a mission. Those kinds of friends are gifts from the Divine.

Telling A New Story – Oracle Of The 7 Energies

watching-sunrise-throught-a-lens-ball-riviera-romagnola-picture-id980949016 Telling A New Story – Oracle Of The 7 Energies

Throughout recorded history — and long before — humankind has recognized the sacred energy that courses through each and every living thing. Many cultures and philosophies recognize the seven sacred energies of life, each with a separate center and a separate wisdom of their own. They represent seven themes that we experience through the stories about life we tell ourselves, whether we’re aware of it or not.

When you do become aware of these energies and these stories, you can activate and balance them, you widen your potential by moving into wholeness.

Doing this kind of energy work is a way to look at the totality of your life’s stories — the way you think, how you make choices, and what you encounter within yourself — as well as the conditions of your world as you journey forward. It’s so, so important that I created my brand-new deck, Oracle of the 7 Energies, around this concept!

While the seven energy centers work together synergistically, it’s also critical to understand and look at them individually as well. That’s why I want to take you through each of the energies so you can begin to understand their importance, the related story, and where you may need to put some attention (and intention!).

Energy From The Inside Out

peace-in-nature-picture-id497211782 Energy From The Inside Out

I’ve said time and time again that change shows up on the OUTSIDE once we make shifts in our thinking and our alignment on the INSIDE. True transformation happens at a soul-level first before we ever see a glimmer of change in the external world.

Let’s take energy. Everything in your internal and external world is made up of energy, we know that as a scientific fact. Your body, your intentions, the chair you’re sitting in, the tree outside your window — it’s all energy. At the most basic level, the electrons in your chair and in your body and in your intentions and in the tree are identical.

If you want to change something in your world, it must first begin as an intention before it can be manifested in the outer world. No intention, no result. It’s like expecting the Uber Eats driver to arrive at your door with your pad thai order without actually picking up the phone or sending a text to order it!

Embracing Change With Intention

Embracing Change With Intention Embracing Change With Intention

As we move towards the end of June, there is so much going on in our hearts, our minds, our world, and the heavens. Yes, Mercury is in retrograde, but that’s not all! This week we’ve also experienced a solar eclipse, a new moon, and the summer solstice… on top of everything that’s been happening in our day-to-day lives. So if you’re feeling a bit… unsettled… that’s natural! It’s all part of the divine chaos that has entered our global consciousness and the beginning of the Aquarian age.

It feels abrupt because it is. This is a full-on paradigm shift, and although it’s been coming for a while it feels like a giant whomp on our collective and individual noggins. We’re going through momentous change, internally and externally, and it’s critical to give ourselves space and time to adapt. There is still more awesome change to come, and we need to allow ourselves recovery time so we’re ready to do our part whatever that may be.

I see a huge opportunity in front of us. Yes, it can seem daunting.  Yes, it can seem overwhelming. But this is what is in front of us, today. We’re all being invited at this time in human history to address things that challenge us to our core like the fall out from how we handle the global pandemic, what to do and how to change systemic racism. On top of this we have seismic shifts in the economic system and the health care system and the education system, all the things that have been revealed as not working as well as we need them to.

“The Highest Good” In Times Of Chaos

united-we-stand-picture-id172945925 “The Highest Good” In Times Of Chaos

You’ve probably heard me talk about staying in alignment “with the highest good.” There are some misconceptions about what I mean when I talk about “highest good.”

First, naturally, we tend to think of “the highest good” as what’s our personal highest good. But that’s not what I’m talking about. Instead, I’m talking about what’s best for everyone collectively. And that means it’s not just about ME, it’s about WE.

The good news there, though, is that it isn’t all self-sacrifice, throwing yourself on the pyre for the good of humankind. Nope, no martyrs need apply! Because YOU are part of the collective “we,” so when you’re contributing to the good of all, we’re contributing to our good, too.

The other thing that can confuse people is that what’s in our highest good isn’t all sunshine and rainbow unicorn poop. Sometimes it is! It’s fairy dust and angel wings and tinkling bells, and happy signs from the universe that are unmistakable. But a lot of the time, though, it’s the shadowy side of things that we want to ignore, hide from, resist or refuse that needs to be illuminated for the good of all. So this is why I always say – Love, Light and SHADOW!!

6 Steps To Find Hope In A Hairball!

am-a-mess-picture-id1132528393 6 Steps To Find Hope In A Hairball!

I’ve been struggling with what to say as of late because there is so much going on in the world. Often, I feel like I’m trapped in a giant hairball of my personal emotions and the swirling assaulting energy of the collective I tune into as an empath.

I wonder if it’s the same for you? Do you feel it? Does it help galvanize your desire to be part of the wave of change and social healing that is calling us awake?

Maybe it moved. Too much, too little, rapid relentless movement and frozen all at the same time, stuck in that hairball that is now rolling down a giant hill like a wild tumbleweed gathering the best and worst of everything in its path. Maybe mine might get caught in a hole so I can get centered.

Nope. Not gonna happen. The center has to be found on the fly, and on the roll. Dizzying to look at, but all of it is meaningful.

I have been zeroing in on one particular thread in the ball though…that one is hope. I hold on, albeit not too tightly, lest its fragile fraying slender form snaps in my grasp. I close my ego’s eyes and allow my soul to guide me into the heart of it, where it will never break, where it’s woken up like a string in a harp, already reverberating in the key of F — the sound that wakes the energy of the heart.

I find listening to the prompts of the heart reduces fear and anxiety swiftly. It also brings in a deep reminder of our humanity and our inherent connectivity to a Higher Power that ushers in a true sense of conscience. It’s the heart that knows the grace of stepping in and standing up.

So, I am going to share with you some tips on what has worked for me. What I am doing now so I can show up daily without getting lost, with the hopes that it might give you some of your own ideas of what might work for you.

Staying In Alignment When The World Seems Crazy

woman-standing-poised-practicing-wu-tai-chi-on-the-end-of-a-concrete-picture-id934788776 Staying In Alignment When The World Seems Crazy

This morning, I felt it.

All of it… the tears, the grief, the sense of how REAL this all is. If you are the same — feeling the darkness and the fear, I want to send you a huge virtual hug right now. You are not alone!

And while the hug may help, the REAL path out of the pit is to stay focused on the solutions. We want (and need) solutions-based ways and protocols that keep us close to our higher power, and help us hold onto a positive vision.

We need to hold space for a true vision, one that isn’t set on “This will be all over on XYZ date, and THEN I’ll feel better.” Instead, we have to make room for the unknown. We don’t know WHEN everything will be over, or when (if ever) things will go back to “normal.” When we do that, we set ourselves up for failure because there’s no way to know when things will be over, or what the new “normal” will look like. That can cause even more stress.
