When we start getting obsessed with our own negative thoughts and brooding over them,  when we simply can't free ourselves from our nagging and repeated thinking,  when we are trying very hard in our minds, to sort situations, we call it Rumination.

This is really a basic human tendency,  I mean obsessing over a particular thought,  but as it begins to overwhelm us, it turns into stress. 

SENSE OF POWER

On the negative side of rumination, we understand the power struggle of the human mind. It is basically a constant repetition of negative thinking patterns which take over. When you are experiencing the feeling of a situation, which you perhaps experienced a day earlier,  maybe someone said something to hurt you,  and you continue to carry that hurt in your mind constantly,  you keep repeating that thought within you and actually magnify that whole situation and that hurtful feeling so much,  that it simply overtakes your whole life.  You then start rollicking in stress.

All stress is basically arising from ignoring our emotional self.  We seem to be bombarded by information on Self love and Self care. Most of the time, we overlook this as people think Self love is synonymous with selfishness, and this in itself reflects a negative emotion. We need to understand that self love is an essential quality,  and emotional self care, is inherently needed by us. 

It is only when the awareness strikes you, that, you are neglecting a certain part of your innerself, which is leading you towards stress, you pick up on your stance, and start focusing on it,  and then start working towards alleviating it. 

SELF CARE

This in itself is about creating a plan, which you need to customize, to your own requirements, as each one's emotional requirements are different according to his own inherent needs. A self care plan for a student would obviously be different from that for a retired person. 

Assessing and reassessing certain areas in life is very essential.

We then understand that any form of Self care, like a massage, or a hot soak in the bathtub, or any activity that revitalizes us on a mind body level is essential for our extreme well being.

In simple and lucid words we could say that, any activity that you perform, where you stay fully present, and very well rooted in the "here" and "now" along with a completely non judgemental attitude, can be called Mindfulness. 
 
How to get there and start practicing and living in this state of mindfulness, is of course the crucial answer. As I had mentioned earlier, there are various strategies which we can adapt to this very vital and extreme state of relaxation,  but I am going to concentrate here today on what we will call Mindfulness meditation.

We are on the path to stress management. But as we walk along this path, changes are constantly taking place in our lives. We normally just do not keep pace with these changes,  but if we start doing so,  we can start upgrading our stress management theories and skills accordingly. 

For most of us,  stressing becomes a way of life,  and we step into a comfort zone with it. We may begin to feel sometimes,  that we are not able to control the circumstances for the moment. But we can control our response to it. 

There of course, cannot be one style or strategy for all people. For each one of us, relief from stress comes in our own unique way. Whatever strategy works for one may not be ideally suited for the other. So it is important that we have, a number of stress management tools at hand.  Each one of us can decide,  which is the tool, best suited to us. 

Today I feel like suggesting, some very basic and simple strategies,  which can be worked from home, as it is, only in the privacy of our own homes are we far more relaxed than anywhere else, it is our natural comfort zone. So everything we do in our comfort zone works better and faster on us.

Physical activity has always been given a lot of importance in health related issues, so we can even be justified in saying that,  stress is the direct result of how actively we have maintained our physical health.
 
I did discuss earlier,  how stressful experiences,  contribute in a big way to weight change,  and I do believe seriously that the control button to these changes,  is so very much within us. 

IMPORTANCE OF EXERCISE

Exercise can actually ward off many kinds of mental health problems, even before they start raising their heads. Research also tells us, that exercise can improve the symptoms of existing emotional and mental health issues.

We mostly on the normal scale, evaluate mental health issues, like stress specially, with psychological factors, and people land up with psychiatrists, psychologists and therapists for stress relief. 

These people need to realize the intrinsic value of physical exercise and the key role it plays in balancing our stress levels. It is only now that exercise is being recognized as the official part of the treatment for mental health issues.



EXERCISE CAN ALLEVIATE DEPRESSION
The main issue with stress is that it takes you into a level of depression and makes you redundant in your main activity level. 

SIGNS OF DEPRESSION
The main signs which take over when stress overwhelms us are fatigue, lethargy, decreased energy, insomnia, social withdrawal. 

PHYSICAL CHANGES
1. Unexplained aches and pains
2. Weight gain and weight loss 
3. Increased or decreased appetite

EMOTIONAL ISSUES ARISING
1. Sadness
2. Feeling of guilt
3. Loss of self esteem 
4. Helplessness
 
MOOD SWINGS
Irritability, anger, anxiety and pessimism, indifference and being critical are some of the ways in which we project our moods. 
 
CHANGES IN THOUGHT PATTERNS
Stress causes a lack of concentration, indecisiveness, confusion, disorganization and memory issues. On the other hand if we look at what exercise can do for us to eliminate these negative factors is amazing. 

PROMOTES POSITIVITY
It enhances the well being of the body, specially for those who feel mentally fit, improves moods, energy levels, quality of sleep. 

DECREASES STRESS HORMONES
Hormones like cortisol get decreased, increases the endorphins. The feel good chemicals in the body get enhanced. 

NATURAL BOOST TO IMMUNE SYSTEM
As the mood gets elevated,  it heightens the natural metabolism within us. 
 
PROMOTES CONFIDENCE
Since it helps us loose weight,  tones the body, maintains a healthy glow. There is a constant positive change happening within us. This naturally uplifts the self confidence. 

DISTRACTION FROM NEGATIVITY
Exercise takes your mind off your problems and you are able to redirect your thoughts on to a positive mode. 
 
SOURCE OF SOCIAL SUPPORT
When you join a yoga class or any group activity class like it maybe a spinning class or perhaps dancing, it gives an immense boost to stress release. 
 
OVERALL HEALTH BENEFITS
Regular exercise facilitates a lower heart rate, controlled Blood Pressure,  improved respiration, reduces depression and increases energy level. 

BETTER SELF WORTH
Looking good makes you feel good. We can say that more than half the battle of life's joyfulness is won, when you facilitate your own feel good factor. 

SOCIAL PHOBIAS
These are hugely generated by stress. Regular exercise, like swimming, cycling, aerobic exercise, running etc, these all help in alleviating stress by improving overall health condition. 

RECOMMENDATION
Before you start a strict physical discipline for yourself, I would suggest, you consult your medical doctor. Only he can advise you the best form of exercise, for your particular body type and physical condition. Consulting your dietician is also imperative. 
We are all unique individuals and require personal plans for ourselves. 

PLAN A COMMITMENT
Make your healthy well being, your topmost priority. Stay patient and consistent with your plan. Enjoy your results.
 
Be stress free and feel joyful.

We have to first delve into our level of awareness,  this is what holds the key to what we need to do to keep us calm,  happy and also find us the means to what keeps us centered, the ongoing techniques and formulas we need,  to maintain the balance. 

IDENTIFYING THE TYPES OF STRESS
This is honestly the first step we need to take,  to tackle our stress situation before it actually starts. 
The human beings natural state is joy,  but because he looses alignment with his own inherent self, he does not allow himself the state of balance and joy,  which is his true nature. He starts letting his environment and circumstances to influence him and then starts playing into the hands of various types of stressors.

We all have a habit of self talk,  and it is this habit which makes us perceive things as less stressful or more stressful.  If we tell ourselves that something is difficult, it actually starts seeming so And eventually becomes so, but if we tell ourselves that something is easy and enjoyable,  that is what we begin to attract into our lives.  So we can understand that by using self talk that is optimistic rather than pessimistic, has very many benefits as far as stress management is concerned. That directly affects our behavior and subsequently our productivity and our health. 

LIMITING OURSELVES
Most people have a way if living in their own fortress.  They will give themselves the negative message, that they can't do something.  Then the belief seems to somehow fit itself into that mode,  and you stop looking for a solution. 

POSITIVE SELF TALK
You need to stop negative self talk, which could turn into a self fulfilling prophecy. Tell yourself that you can do a certain thing. Do not be in a space of vagueness,  a "maybe" sort of mindset.  Be positive and sure of yourself,  and you will actually create a self fulfilling prophecy.

In the competitive world of today, I feel that maximum amount of stress is actually carried by students. They are at the threshold of life and they feel a constant impulse of restlessness within themselves. It seems to begin even before they learn to speak. Parents are silently without a conscious awareness sending it through their vibrational signals to their kids.

Furthermore the environment around seems to enhance it. Everything around us seems to carry this unseen tension of what the future will bring along. There is a level of restlessness in everybody's mannerism. The body language of all people seems to limit this restlessness. Catching the signals and quelling the restlessness is imperative for the well-being of all.

Since exams are a constant in a student's life, their stress is continuous. I just feel the need to talk about how we need to handle this level of stress, which encompasses and impacts participation in classes, performance of tests on the general well being in a students life.

Very often we are faced with stressful situations,  which we can understand are here to stay. It could be in terms of:

1. A job you need to keep
2. A relationship you need to stay on with 
 
It could also be any other situation which you feel cannot changed with immediate effect. You know if you allow the situation to overwhelm you,  it will take you into a level of chronic stress,  which is the cause of various health issues.

When someone walks into my office and says"I'm stressed" I just know that there is not enough self care happening.

Of course we cannot be always controlling our circumstances,  but definitely we can control how well we are reacting to them,  dealing with them and keeping control of our lives. 

Connecting to one's inner peace, inner level of calm and strength is what is truly required of us, in order to remain stress free. Allowing the flow from within and connecting ones soul and spirit to the body is so essential. Being tired from your routine , eating poorly and feeling generally fatigued makes you vulnerable and more reactive to stress.

Resilience to stress only comes when you use the resources around you to keep your calm,  and be less reactive to maintain the balance.

Taking good care of your body,  mind and soul, is what is required and is essential. Living your life in a state of balance, is an art you need to master. This comes only when you continuously decide to take control of life, and move forward in a disciplined manner.

Getting your body in order is very important and keeping your mind and soul in a perfect connect is what we desire.

All of us, deep within ourselves, feel that need to be needed. The feeling of having a meaning to our lives is essential. A distinct sense of purpose, that you are valued because you are worth it.

UNRESOLVED FEELINGS

People have a habit of shutting down a conversation, the moment it gets heated. They feel that by simply keeping quiet, things will get resolved. But we need to realize that by suppressing feelings, it does not lead to any answers.
