Since we know that stress is an individual capacity, it is a response that varies from individual to individual, we also need to realize that this happens because people are "wired" to react differently to stress. Each one of us is secreting different levels of stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol in the same situation. This tendency of secreting these special hormones can change from time to time.

If you are a person who is specially sensitive to stress, it is important for you to try consciously to maintain a low stress lifestyle.

Today I am going to address the problems of over sensitive individuals, whose stress response remains very high. It has been observed that highly stressed individuals seemingly need more food than others. Their requirements of carbohydrates is also much higher than others. They feel very low on energy if they are consuming lesser carbohydrates. These are people who are releasing high levels of cortisol in response to stress, than most other people.


If we are sensitive to our body's needs and allow our feelings to flow with ease, and with a higher awareness level, we will realize that we will naturally get more consciously aware of our stress levels. This in turn will actually facilitate us in controlling our stress level. Once our awareness is there for us to notice and relate to, it is easier and simpler for us to practice our stress management techniques.

STRESS REEKS HAVOC WITH OUR HEALTH

Lot of research goes on constantly on the effects of stress on our health.

The famous Mayo Clinic staff, which is an established authority in these matters says that our bodies are hard wired to react to stress in ways meant to protect us against predators and other aggressors. These threats are actually rare today. But we have many other reasons to keep us in the stress zone.

In today's world we are faced with huge multiple demands like heavy workloads, financial worries, taking care of family etc. These are threatening demands on our psyche's. We are constantly under assault from these. We need to deal adequately with these stressors in order to lead a good life.

UNDERSTANDING THE STRESS RESPONSE

This is very imperative to understand. For example, if you encounter a perceived threat such as, a dog on the street barks at you, while you are walking, your hypothalamus, which is a tiny region at the base of your brain, sets off an alarm system in your body. With a combination of nerve and hormonal signals, this system prompts the adrenalin glands to release hormones such as adrenalin and cortisol.

CORTISOL

We need to understand this hormone in order to understand stress. This primary stress hormone increases sugars in the blood stream, enhances the brain's usage of glucose, and increases the availability of substances that repair the tissue.

Cortisol alters the immune system responses and suppresses the digestive system, reproductive system and growth processes. This also communicates with regions of the brain that control mood, motivation and fear.

NATURAL STRESS RESPONSE

The body's stress response is usually self limiting. Once the perceived threat has gone away, the hormone levels drop to normal. Cortisol levels also drop, and the body systems resume normal activities. Heart rate, Blood Pressure etc all come to normal.

A very long term exposure to stress can mean over exposure to stress and other hormones. This disrupts the body's processes and puts it at risk to various health issues.

Stressful events are a part of life, you are not maybe equipped to be completely stress free, but you can take steps to manage the effect of stress in your life and treat yourself accordingly.
