It's easy to forget that we are all perfect in our own design. Sometimes we muck it up with habits and choices that do not serve us.

Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: Doing for Others, Seeing for Ourselves

marknepo12.8

A tribe migrates west because they are being persecuted. They emigrate into the mountains. They settle on a plateau and, together, they clear that part of the forest and build their homes, creating a settlement, which the elder of the tribe names Crestview. In time, their children are born where they have arrived, into a place where they wake each day in a clearing with a view of the vastness.

The paradox at the center of this small story is that sometimes we have to make pilgrimage to live in the open in order to have a view of the vastness of life, and sometimes we are in debt to those before us for what we assume is a birthright. Sometimes, we have to stand on the commitment and hard work of others. Yet, there are other passages in life that everyone has to journey through by themselves.

See Progress

new-born-sea-turtle-walking-to-the-sea-picture-id1163483172 See Progress

Are some things getting better?

The Practice:
See progress.

Why?

There are always things that are getting worse. For example, over the past year, you probably know someone who has become unemployed or ill or both, and there’s more carbon in the atmosphere inexorably heating up the planet.

But if you don’t recognize what’s improving in your own life, then you feel stagnant, or declining. This can foster what researchers call “learned helplessness” – a dangerously slippery slope. It typically takes only a few experiences of painful entrapment to create it but many times as many counter-experiences to undo it.

If you don’t recognize whatever is getting better in the people around you, then you might feel more disappointed or despairing than you need to feel – and they might feel not seen, criticized, or “why bother.”

If we don’t see the positive trends in our world amidst the negative ones – such as for many people, improved medical care and access to information, and less extreme poverty – then we’ll get swallowed up by all the bad news, and give up trying to make this world better.

This is not looking through rose-colored glasses. The point is to see life as it is, particularly your own life – including the progress that is occurring.

23 Questions to Celebrate Your Year & Set New Year Goals for 2018

Jack-Canfield-23-Questions-to-celebrate-opt2

As you set your new year goals for 2018, it's a good idea to take stock of the progress you've made toward your goals this year. For many people, this review is unpleasant and can even lead to a downward spiral.

If you didn't achieve all of the goals you set at the beginning of the year, you may feel like you have failed. Our self-esteem can take a hit, we can become disheartened and discouraged, and our motivation drops. Some people actually become depressed.

If this sounds familiar, it's time to reframe how you look at success. Zeroing in on accomplishments that didn't happen puts your focus on what you lack, rather than on what you have (the things you did experience and accomplish). This subtle mental trap leads to a host of negative consequences, which usually leads to attracting more lack.

5 Ways to Stay Grounded and Connected Living this Thing We Call Life

I am a work in progress … always … and some days are better than others. How about you?

One thing I see a lot in my clients and students, and something I have struggled with in the past myself … is staying connected to spirit … being consistent with my spiritual practice. I have found that for myself, that it is an absolute necessity even though for many years I felt like it was a choice. It’s not, not for me anyway. I soon discovered … that for me …
