Rise Above All Runaway Reactions

guyblog7.26

As events occur in our lives, it seems we always know exactly what they mean for us. Then immediately we rush into what feels like the appropriate emotional reaction. That reaction further influences the way we view the event, and in this way our initial response is “confirmed.” We rarely question either our view of events or our response to them.

As we are carried away unconsciously from one automatic reaction to another, these conditioned responses grow more entrenched. And with each repetition, they feel more and more natural to us.The likelihood that we will ever question them diminishes. Our behavior grows more settled into these mechanical responses and the way we view events becomes increasingly rigid. As a result, we are taken further away from the spontaneous lives we were meant to enjoy.

But it’s not necessary to continue being defeated by our own mechanical responses. We can learn to recognize these “dark horse reactions” eager to take us on a bad ride, before we are carried away by them.

Holistic Health and Wellness Tips for Seasonal Allergies

woman-sneezing These natural, simple, and safe practices may help you breathe easier

Summer is almost here, and with warmer weather and blooming plants, many people are suffering from the sniffling, sneezing, and congestion that comes from seasonal allergies.

When pollen from flowers, grass, and trees enters the body through the respiratory system, it can cause a reaction from the immune system. Our bodies respond to these unfamiliar particles by producing histamine. This is a naturally produced chemical that’s meant to protect the body from foreign invaders, but it can cause inflammation, coughing, sneezing, a runny nose, and more.

There is also a connection between allergens and liver function. The liver filters the blood. When the liver is overloaded and unable to completely detoxify the body, the result may be an immune system that overreacts to potential allergens, resulting in allergic symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing and congestion.

There are things you can do to avoid allergens that aggravate your symptoms. If you know grass irritates you, try to avoid direct contact with it. If the pollen count is high, try to stay indoors a bit more that day. Other prevention strategies include using air filters to remove pollen and dust from indoor air, changing and washing your clothes, and showering or bathing after spending time outdoors. Regularly cleaning and wiping down surfaces in your home can also help.

Holistic health practices can provide natural ways to help prevent and recover from seasonal allergies. Here are some to try:

My One Intention This New Year

Maria-Shriver-My-One-intention-this-new-year

Last year around New Year’s, my kids and I stood around a fire. One by one, we threw into the fire what we wanted to burn from the past year. We also voiced our intentions for our lives moving forward.

We did it again this year, but this time, I had just one intention that I wanted to set. That was to live and lead from a place of love. That’s it. Every other intention I’ve made in the past pales in comparison.

Trust me, leading from a place of love is going to be way harder than losing 10 pounds (which can be done, but it always comes back — at least for me). It’s going to be way harder than silencing the critical voice in my head (although I did make progress on that last year, so I’m proud of myself for that). It’s also going to be way harder than giving up sugar (well, that is pretty hard, so maybe I’ll save that one for Lent).

Yes, leading from a place of love is going to be my toughest intention yet because it means I’m going to have to show love to people who don’t show it to me. It means I’m going to have to show it to people who I don’t agree with, who I don’t care for, and who don’t show it to those that I do care about. It also means I’m going to have to find it deep within myself when my first reaction might be anything but loving.
