When the new year rolls around, many of us resolve to change something about our bodies, our careers, or our relationships. All of those things, though, are external. What will bring about a real change in your life is a change in your mindset.

The effect our mentality has tangible aspects of our life is astounding. You'll find that a renewed mind can put a new shine on aspects of your life you may have neglected, and help you to see the beauty in the small things. Here's how to achieve a refreshed mind in 2019.

  1. Spend more time outdoors

There's nothing so effective as nature when it comes to resetting the mind. Whether you've had a bad day or a bad year, escaping to the great outdoors can act as the ultimate catharsis – and the best news is that it doesn't cost a penny.

It doesn't matter whether you take a hiking trip to the mountains or spend a few moments appreciating the night sky when you park on your driveway on your way home from work. Nature is always there to allow us that vital moment of pause.

  1. Orient your mind outwards

We're self-focused creatures, so it makes sense that the majority of our thoughts are about number one. However, you may find that many of these thoughts are negative and self-defeating. If that's the case, it may be time to orient your thinking outwards.

Whenever a self-destructive thought enters your consciousness, think about whether there's a better way to spend your mental energy. Is there a community project you could brainstorm some fundraising ideas for? Is someone else struggling in your life, and needs your help and friendship to get through? Transforming your dark ruminations into outward-directed sentiments brings many benefits.   1. Practice optimism

It's often said that people are apt either to see the cup half full or half empty. If you tend toward the pessimistic side of the spectrum, the advent of a new year signals the perfect opportunity to make optimism a habit. Rather than dreaming up the worst-case scenario for every situation, focus your attention on something currently positive in your life.

  1. Remove yourself from adverse environmental influences

To allow your mind the best chance to renew, you need to address the environmental factors which may be keeping you exhausted and sad.

To appreciate the world's most magnificent dimensions, we have to firmly locate ourselves within it. This can't be done if our minds are controlled by technology 24/7.  If you have to stare at a computer at work, then so be it. When you get home, though, it's time to unplug and relax. Do some yoga, go for a run, or cook a delicious, wholesome dinner. Don't waste your life watching other people live theirs.
