Welcome Faces

iStock-871180142 Welcome Faces

What do their faces say to you?

The Practice:
Welcome faces.

Why?

As our ancestors evolved over millions of years in small bands, continually interacting and working with each other, it was vitally important to communicate in hundreds of ways each day. They shared information about external "carrots" and "sticks," and about their internal experience (e.g., intentions, sexual interest, inclination toward aggression) through gestures, vocalizations - and facial expressions. Much as we developed uniquely complex language, we also evolved the most expressive face in the entire animal kingdom.

Intuitive Self-Care: A List Of My Favorite Steps For Cultivating Self-Care And Wellness

behind-of-yoga-woman-at-the-beach-picture-id873393234 Intuitive Self-Care

Many of us are juggling so many responsibilities and challenges in life that our own health and self-care ends up on the back burner. From long workdays and endless obligations to putting others’ needs before our own and ignoring our inner voice and intuition, we’re like robotic race cars racing around on the verge of running out of electricity. (Mind you, our cars are at least environmentally friendly.) We don’t want to pull over to allow our engines to recharge because we might get behind in the race. Yet, if we stop to think about it, we aren’t quite sure what the race is ultimately for in the first place!

I’ve had so much going on lately it’s got me thinking about self-care and healing. Many of us are struggling with something these days—whether exhaustion, illness, allergies, pain, depression, anxiety, or a cold that doesn’t want to go away. Beyond those more obvious symptoms, so many of us just feel stressed and out of balance.

One Simple Solution! One Step

surprised-young-woman-picture-id659171586 One Simple Solution! One Step

Wouldn't be nice to not just react and place yourself outside the situation? Especially during stressful situations.

New research (cited here & below) reveals that in times of stress, talking to our selves in the third-person helps control emotions and enables our conductor-mind to manifest harmony (i.e., health) within our organ “orchestra” .

For example, say Bruce is stressed-out and is emotionally reactive when addressing himself in the first person: “Why am I distressed?” Bruce has a completely different response when he expresses his feelings in the third-person: “Why is Bruce distressed?”

How Words Color Our lives

woman-whispering-to-her-friend-picture-id494639820 How Words Color Our lives
''Why am I so unhappy,'' ''Everybody seems to think that I should be a joyous creature as I seem to have every material comfort, yet I feel completely listless and burdened with stress.'' These are statements I get to hear very often from my clients, friends, relatives and a lot more people.

We need to understand that the human spirit thrives on praise. Self-worth is a revered concept. It is only stimulated in us if we are in an adequately comfortable space within ourselves.

WORDS COLOR OUR LIVES

We can never underestimate the power of words. Our whole lives revolve around language. If a person is constantly criticized it erodes his self-esteem. Children are particularly sensitive to this. They tend to believe whatever their parents or teachers tell them. Negative statements erode their self-esteem. They develop a compromised self-esteem if criticized constantly.

Small Changes for Big Gains in Spiritual Well-Being

female-student-is-studying-in-a-cherry-blossom-park-picture-id987914458 Small Changes for Big Gains in Spiritual Well-Being

If you’re mentally or physically exhausted, it can be hard to feel that all is well with your soul. Most of us live very hectic lives that brings on stress, anxiety, and a constant state of busyness. However, it’s time to take back your physical and mental health. By introducing small changes into your life, you can look and feel better and have more energy for the day. Here’s how to get started.

Mindfulness

According to Mind Body Green, research has proven that mindfulness can help with stress, anxiety, and depression. It can also lower blood pressure, improve sleep, and boost immunity. What is mindfulness? Some people call it being “in the moment.” Take the time to be aware of what you are doing, those around you, and your surroundings as you focus on the task at hand -- whatever it is.

Update Your Bedroom

You spend 33 percent of your life sleeping, and that means plenty of time in your bedroom. This should be a place of peace and tranquility that minimizes stress and maximizes sleep. Here are ways to update your bedroom:

Learn to say no and create balance in your life

walking-girl-on-the-railway-picture-id612734528 Learn to say no and create balance in your life

Most of us in today's hectic paced world are overscheduled, and frankly, most of us can't say "No". The simple act of not taking on more responsibility than you can handle, should not be a stressor, but it seems to be a major factor we add on to our bandwagon of stressors. we already seem to carry.

WHY CAN'T WE SAY NO

This is a difficult task for some of us. we think perhaps people concerned may get upset by our refusal, or maybe you are guilty when you are not helping others or maybe you actually accumulate so much stress, that eventually it makes you less healthy and less helpful.

INNER CONFLICT

This gets created because you don't know in which direction to swing. Sometimes we carry a misguided notion of " I can do it all" My suggestion to you would be '' Please get rid of this notion"

take on only as much as you can handle and feel comfortable with.

Is Feeling Cared About Important?

Is Feeling Cared About Important? Is Feeling Cared About Important?

Take a moment to call to mind the sense of being cared about.

Who Has Cared About You?

The Practice:
Is Feeling Cared About Important.

Why?

Everyone knows what it’s like to care about someone. Remember being with a friend, a mate, a pet: you feel warmly connected, and want him or her not to suffer and to be happy.

On the other hand, you’ve probably had the sense, one time or another, of not being cared about. That you didn’t matter to another person, or to a group of people. Maybe they weren’t actively against you, but they sure weren’t for you.

Different Ways To Reduce Stress

breathe Different Ways To Reduce Stress

Since stress seems to come from so many avenues, so does stress relief. There are so many ways to handle it. Most people believe in a certain particular and personal favorite strategy for stress relief, but in my opinion the most efficient way would be to create an overall effective plan that includes many different ways of reducing stress instead of a particular favorite and suitable plan that would deal with stress from one's own individual angle.

CLEAR THINKING STRATEGY

Bringing clarity to the mind is by far the most important way to eliminate stress. When the thinking is clear in our heads it is only then that we can take the most sensible and beneficial decisions for ourselves. So keeping the mind uncluttered and clear is our best bet in life.

REVERSE THE STRESS RESPONSE

If you are familiar with the concept of reversing the stress response you start thinking more clearly and you can actually avoid the negative effects of chronic stress.

Mastering stress is an art that can be learnt. Being a master craftsman at this art is what is your real key to leading a beautiful life. Being a mastercraftsman at this one is your key to leading a beautiful life.

Making Time for What You Value Most

Making-Time-for-What-You-Value-Most Making Time for What You Value Most

This week was a good time to think about what you value in your life.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron delivered an impassioned speech to Congress this week about what he values and what he believes in. Hearing him speak got me thinking about my own beliefs and values.

“Our strongest beliefs are challenged by the rise of a yet unknown new world order,” Macron said. So true. There are so many forces these days that are testing our values and our beliefs — those we hold as individuals, and as nations.

That’s why I think it’s a good exercise for all of us to stop and think, “What do I believe?” “What do I value?”

Do you know what you believe in? Do you live your life according to those beliefs and values? None of us are perfect at walking our walk, but what I’ve found helpful is to stop and check in with one’s self and assess how one’s values and beliefs are lining up with one’s actual life.

For example…

Do you talk about saving the planet and then not recycle?

Do you talk about the importance of parenting and then look at your schedule and see that you are a workaholic?

Do you talk about women’s empowerment, but as a business leader, you refuse to provide paid family leave?

Are you a registered Democrat, but in your mind and heart you are more purple than blue and yet you’re afraid to register as an Independent? Or vice versa?

Do you talk about brain health and then not follow what doctors tell you? (My daughter told me to add this because I need to do a better job at what I’m telling others to do, like managing stress and eating less sugar.)

Welcoming Change

nikhil-kumar-231465-unsplash Welcoming Change
As I write this I’m flying home to Alaska. I had a fun weekend with our middle child. She happily committed to her future college, a life changing event. This weekend I connected with two people experiencing unplanned health issues, also a life changing event. My mind keeps returning to life altering events. We all have them. Some are happy, a birth of a child, marriage and job success. Some are not so happy, health scares, loss of loved ones and divorce. What they all have in common, good or bad, is the potential for positive life changes. It got me thinking. Why is it that we allow ourselves to struggle? This is in reference to the events that aren’t so happy. Often we don’t see any other choices in our life, until the Universe gives us reason to pause. What if we decided to pause where it feels really good? We could do that. We could design our life around feel good moments. Think about all the times that you feel wonderful. Maybe you’re on vacation and you feel free and healthy. You are practicing wellness habits, eating healthy, meditating, enjoying your family and friends. It is so easy to think these habits are related to time allowance. Living a happy life has nothing to do with time, or lack of time. A happy life requires each individual to look at how they want to fill up each moment. Who and what are you inviting into your happy life? A happy life is not dependent on the amount of money in your life. There is a young man that I have been lucky to spend time with. He delivers groceries for a living. Each time he delivers our groceries, I am happy to see him. When we hug good bye, his energy fills me up. He has that special gift, so many people are seeking. He is genuinely happy.  What would your life look like if you designed it for your optimal health and happiness? What might your mantra be?I AM HEALED I AM LOVED I AM HAPPYI personally have experienced life changes so sudden, I had no time to think. It is in those sudden changes that God speaks loudly. The first time this happened was when I came across a violent crime scene. I feared for my life, as well as others’ lives. It was the first time I channeled a message of love and healing. I didn’t recognize what was occurring. I have had life changes that are essentially a slow unraveling of life as I knew it. God still spoke to me, but I needed to stop and listen. This was when I experienced my health scare. I was offered the opportunity to recognize my connection to source. I was given the opportunity to create a life that allowed me to share peace with my family and others. This required letting go of some habits and even people that didn’t fit into the life I was building. I am still learning how I best receive the messages of God, and how I best share them. I feel blessed to have these experiences that helped me discover peace, awareness, love and happiness. When the Universe slows me down I answer with an open, happy heart. CHANNELING We come thru you and to you in all directions, all colors and all sounds. Yet just a small few will recognize the shift inside that creates a place for inspiration to land and bloom.. At all times you are surrounded by energy so pure and true, you only need to remember your true essence to allow it to take you away.. Is the fear of losing what you believe is truth; larger than the memory of eternal peace? It is inevitable that you also, (the essence that is enjoying the human form) you too, will fall into awareness.. You will experience the blending and churning of the beautiful energies that are always part of your story, always waiting to guide you back to Love.. Always waiting to remind you of your eternal wellness and connection to all.. There is an expanded version of you that rests with in your heart, mind and soul. This version of you will eventually want for more, want to experience the total of all that is. Returning to a state of only love and expressions of love.. there is no hate, fear or pain.. we reside in total harmony.. There is a part of you that rests with us.. You are dancing between the two worlds.. softly you will return to us as we have returned to you.. As you make your way home the sounds and colors don’t match your frequencies.. but soon the blending will take pace and you will experience all as one.. you will experience your human self, with a slight shift of awareness, you will experience the pure essence of your- self with an awareness of energetic exchange.. we will guide you to many planes and many frequencies.. We will always be with you, We will always carry you gently with us. You are experiencing all this now.. End of Channel In this channel there is reference to two worlds. I have written about this before. What it means is we have a world that has limitations and we have a world free of limitations; the choice is ours to make. I also want to clarify my statement on happiness not being dependent on money. The variable that connects happiness to money, is our relationship to money. I have been happy poor and I have been happy financially stable. I have also been unhappy and struggling financially and even unhappy financially stable. Living a happy abundant life is not always reflected by dollar amounts.God Bless You and may you experience peace and happiness, Polly

Too much of anything is good for nothing

Too much of anything is good for nothing Too much of anything is good for nothing
Some of us are overly sensitive. Mostly people will talk about themselves by saying, ‘I’m a very sensitive person’. But it is always in context to their own feelings.  They like to ignore the fact that they could be inflicting pain on every other person around, yet they carry this ‘injured’ air around them.

Special traits

Highly sensitive people emote on a very different level.  They have some special traits which are very different from the average person. It could also be considered as a positive thing but it has its drawbacks.

Highly sensitive

This is actually a trait which brings both strengths and challenges. Sometimes one is just easily offended by people who mean no harm or they could even be trying to be nice to you. Sometimes the reaction to everyday stressors is also extreme. You may be more affected by negative stressors than most people are.

Wild imagination

You like to believe that you are being bullied by people who mean no harm and then tend to become over emotionally aggressive. You are more deeply affected by others.  Try to manage your reactions, make it your strength rather than a challenge.

10 Simple Self Care Tips To Manage This Mercury Retrograde

10 Simple Self Care Tips To Manage This Mercury Retrograde

(SPECIAL FOR EMPATHS AND HIGHLY SENSITIVE PEOPLE)

This week we are in the first week of the first Mercury retrograde cycle of 2018 which is a perfect time to retrace your steps and have a look at some of the ways in which you need to reaffirm your self-care. It’s also a great time to focus on ways to manage your experience especially if you identify as a highly sensitive person or empath. This particular retrograde in Aries is highly charged and can be quite combustible and combative. That said it’s also perfect for rigorous self-honesty, and really determining what you are enthusiastic about!

So, if you’re sensing the edge in the air and it starts to feel overwhelming you need to find a way to manage your experience. You don’t want to end up feeling like the energy of the world is assaulting you (and it really can feel like that sometimes.)

I’m going to include a video from Nick Ortner at the end of the blog to support you too since he has a great way to dial down anxiety. Bottom line is that intuitive people can suffer if they don’t have tools to manage their boundaries and feelings. (and they can also find it hard to release excess body weight, manage fatigue too etc. but that’s a whole other story)

4 Things To Do When Feeling Emotionally Off

james-Pesavento-4-things-to-do-when-emotionally-off

We all feel bad, or off, or out of alignment at times. Most times we ignore it and keep doing what we have to. But there is a process you can go through that is immensely helpful in resolving the energy – not just ignoring it.

Stop:
Give yourself a minute to become aware, to live consciously in that moment – Stop and create the time and space to experience.  If you ignore the feeling or distract yourself from it, that energy will remain stuck within you.

Look:
Have the courage to look at what you are feeling. It’s telling you something. Bring real insight to the situation: What’s the real cause? Non-alignment with your Divinity, resistance to what is, egoic personalization in a circumstance? What’s the false and true story?

Whenever we listen to good music, it changes our zone. Music is one of the healthiest stress relief measures as it transports us into a different state of emotions according to its nuances. Music affects our minds and bodies in so many different ways and we need to realise and understand that it can be used as an effective stress management vehicle.

8 Morning Rituals to Bring About Energy and Peace

janstree

When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.

~Marcus Aurelius

I’m a morning person, always have been. I wake up around 5 am and bounce out of bed joy-filled, enthusiastic and ready to consume the day. My energy is at its peak and I feel as though nothing can stop me. However, up until five years ago, I didn’t realize how my morning routine was undermining my ability to be the very best I could be. In truth, it was creating blocks to my most authentic life.

You see, I’ve learned that what you do when you first wake up in the morning is a solid gage of not only the quality of your day but by extension the quality of your life.

The cure for this is to create a realistic morning routine - a set of rituals that works for you and you alone. There are myriad ways to accomplish this, but I’m going to share the eight that have made the biggest difference for me. I’m not just talking about starting the day off on the right foot – but truly changing your life in just about every way imaginable.

#1 - Hydrate First

As soon as you get out of bed down a full 8-to-16-ounces of clear water. Before your morning coffee or tea, before you take a shower, before you do anything else, drink your water.

Your body has been in a state of fasting all night, and this liquid miracle will rehydrate you, make your brain feel more alert, and jumpstart your metabolism. It may also help to fill up your tummy so you don’t overeat at breakfast.

#2 - Stretch

Roll right onto the floor (or if it’s too hard for you, lay back down on your bed) taking five minutes to stretch your body. Lay on your back, clasping your knees to chest. Roll from side to side. Remember to breathe deeply throughout your stretching. You’ll most likely hear your spine and joints gently popping as you elongate.  Stand and stretch your arms overhead as you gently stretch from side to side. Kneel on the floor and then place your forehead on the ground. Stretch your arms over your head and gently elongate your spine. Be gentle. Think and move like a cat.

Stretching in the morning improves circulation and helps to increase the blood flow to your muscles. More blood in your muscles translates into more energy in the morning. It also increases blood flow to your brain and sharpens your concentration.

#3 - Tea Meditation

I gave up morning coffee consumption five years ago when out of habit I would lurch from my bed to the kitchen to kidnap an entire pot of bullet-strong Joe and plop down at my desk for the next five hours slamming cup after cup as I  bulldozed through work. Hours later when Panache would make it to my desk I was a barking, short-tempered, over-caffeinated hot mess. My gut was ruined and I suffered terrible diarrhea most days.  I don’t need to tell you that I was so toxic by noon that nobody wanted to be around me.

Now, my morning tea prep is a grace bestowing meditation ritual. I walk slowly, barefoot to the kitchen feeling my feet from heel to toe on the ground. Each step bringing me fully into the present moment.  I take down my favorite over-sized Asian blue ceramic cup and put the water on to boil. I turn  on music that speaks to my soul as I await the whistling of the tea kettle (absolutely no electric tea kettles for me. I love the old-fashioned sound of a kettle’s whistle.) And then I pour the water over the tea and watch it steep.

Return to the Joyful Living of Childhood

renee-singh-return-to-the-joyful-living-of-childhood
Now that we are stepping into the second month of the year,I feel all of us are more relaxed about our performance through the year. The initial euphoria of the new year year and it's newer resolutions is sort of settled into a routine. And yet at the back of our minds lurks this constant need to perform in a manner that leads us to a stress free life.

Happiness is the motivational goal which remains a constant obsession as it should.  Our main purpose on this planet is joy and inching towards it everyday is our essential need and desire.

Over the years as we allow stress to take a toll on our lives, we seem to have stopped living in our natural state which is joy. As children while we were growing up, joyful living was a natural part of our lives and we didn't have to consciously think about it. So now perhaps we should just switch on our childhood mode to reach that sense of emotional level of comfort and joy.

Go into your childhood and connect to the child within you. Think about how relaxed you were and how your thought patterns worked when you were living in those blissful times. Connect backwards in time and live those days .

Adult stress relief strategies seem so much simpler and more effective when we link them to our past happy experiences.

The Best Strategy to Combat Aging

deepak-chopra-best-strategy-to-combat-aging

When people think about growing old, they blame the passage of time—the years roll by, and the body stops looking younger year by year. But the latest science disputes this view. A person ages because the cells in their body age, and cells live only in the present. This is one reason memory remains such a mystery. Brain cells function through electrochemical activity that occurs the instant a chemical reaction or electrical impulse is able to occur. There are no pauses to think about reacting; if the potential is there, the action must follow.

Whatever a brain cell does, it can’t go back to the past. So how do we seem to go back into the past when we remember a childhood birthday party or our first kiss? No one knows, but when the answer is found, it won’t involve time travel, either forward or backward. If you expand this to every cell in the body, they too must function instantly in the present moment when any two molecules interact. So the problem of aging can be stated as the gap between how a cell lives and how a person lives. As people, we repeat the past, get stuck in old habits, cling to stubborn beliefs, fear the future, and in general occupy mental states that are not in the now.

If you can return to the now, you close the gap between your life and the life of your cells, and by doing this, you can prevent aging or even reverse it. Aging isn’t one thing but a complex of possibilities. Which possibilities get triggered is infinitely complicated, but no one has ever shown that any symptoms of aging must occur.

Even though we can all tick off the disagreeable signs of growing old—creaky joints, wrinkled skin, loss of energy, erratic sleep, declining memory, and so on—there is someone who has actually improved as they aged in each of these areas, except perhaps for wrinkles. However unusual, there are individuals who retain limberness, energy, good sleep, mobility, and memory.

A Plan for Managing Stress

Renee-Singh-A-plan-for-managing-stress
People have a tendency to overlook their stress. Every few days I like to write about the benefits of an overall plan for managing stress as I do realise the importance of it from my personal counselling sessions with my clients.

From time to time we need to address the concept of stress management within us. It is not a one time strategy you apply, its an ongoing process you need to keep track of. It is important that you should have an overall plan for managing your stress and not allow your stress levels to rise high before you start handling them.

I feel the need to talk about the avaliable recourses for handling most of the stressful situation's . The smart thing is to combat our own stressful personal scenarios with the recourses available to us.

Most of the time we remain abreast our stressful situation when we keep ourselves on a higher level of awareness and conciousness. It is only when you deal with stress in less than healthy ways that you compound the negative impacts of stress on your health.

It can be that your responses to stress make the challenges you feel, more challenging .

Maintaining Balance

This is the most important aspect of stress management.  We need to create a lifestyle in sync with our values, a schedule to create health promoting habits. We need to understand how to deal with the negatives life metes us on the platter and move our perspective according to our challenges.

Yet many a time we realise that despite all our efforts stress is throwing us off balance.

We need to realise that life does not always turn the way we plan and "true balance " is not a continuous state. There could be many factors that throw things off the scheduled path.

Self-Care Interview Series: Beth Kirby

anya-kasoff-self-care-interview-beth-kirby

Beth Kirby is a photographer, cookbook writer, entrepreneur, and the creator of Local Milk, her food, travel, and lifestyle blog. We are endlessly amazed by Beth’s ability to present her work with both authenticity and style, and we were completely blown away by each one of her thoughtful and inspiring answers in this interview. It’s a true gem.

In this dialogue, Beth tells us about self-care as the foundation for happiness, having a schedule as a way to avoid stress, why she doesn’t believe in the idea of work-life balance, and how her routine has changed since becoming a mother, as well as her newfound love for weight training, the adaptogens and herbs she incorporates into her everyday potions, beauty, motivation, sustenance, and much more. There’s some amazing business advice here, too!

Routine

— Is routine important to you or do you like things to be more open and free?

Routine is so very important to me. Routines ensure that time is carved out for the important things in my days & life. I’m super flexible with my routines so there’s no such thing as “failing”, but the closer I adhere to the routine, the more impact I tend to make in my day.

— What do your mornings look like? If they differ from day to day, describe your ideal morning.

I actually just wrote a little guide to a slow morning routine that details mine! I usually wake up when my baby wakes up, between 6:30-7:30 AM. The first thing I do every morning is make the bed because I feel this sets the tone for the rest of my day. My husband takes the baby to give me 10 minutes to meditate (I love the Headspace app) and do a few sun salutations to wake my body + mind connection up. After that I brew my morning elixir, a simple lemon, ginger, and turmeric tea, and then I do some journaling while I drink it. After that comes breakfast & a matcha potion, a shower & getting dressed for the day, a quick tidy of my space if I need it, and then I’m down to work! I don’t always do every single thing, but the more of them I hit, the better my morning!

— Do you have any bedtime rituals that help you sleep well?

I’m so exhausted at the end of the day, I don’t usually need much help sleeping! I love making moon mylks with sleep promoting herbs as a little night time luxury. We keep the bedroom a “sleep only” zone with no television or computers, so it’s quite easy to pass out once I’m in my own bed (or whatever bed I happen to be in!)

— How has your routine changed since you had your daughter?

It’s gotten a lot more flexible! If she’s having a bad morning, things like preparing breakfast can take a lot longer or maybe I skip the shower (truth time!), but in a lot of ways, it’s made me more routine because if I don’t have a plan and stick to it, the day can slip away a lot more easily when you have kids. I kinda floated through my days doing whatever I wanted whenever I wanted before she was born because I had all the time in the world. Now it’s make hay while the sun shines or forget having any hay! Haha.

New Year, New You?

That time of year is almost here. In a few short weeks, the world will be joining a gym, starting a diet, and setting mind-boggling self-improvement goals.

“This year I’m gonna lose 30 pounds and get in shape.” Or maybe something like, “This is the year I’m going to fit into those old jeans.”

Pretty soon we’ll be bombarded with advertisements to join everything from Gold’s Gym to Jenny Craig. And all those New Year’s Resolutions? The same old, same old plans to make this year THE year that you finally get the body you’ve always wanted?

Kind of exhausting, isn’t it?
