Handling our emotional selves with our busy lives

mother-and-daughter-having-breakfast-picture-id486901382 Handling our emotional selves with our busy lives

Being busy seems to be the norm of today. Earlier, yes it was an exception but in today's world,  the rules of life seem to have changed. Being overwhelmed by this situation is clearly not an option, you will just be tired and on a low energy platform, and go into a chronic stress situation.

THE IMPORTANCE OF STRESS RELIEF

We do realize that in order to keep a balance in our day to day life, stress relief is very important. We need to take on newer habits and discard old ones. We need to circulate the energy within. Stuck energy is stagnant and does not allow positive growth. We just need to move our energy.

The Heartfelt Way

heart The Heartfelt Way

In late November, I had an odd sensation in the night of not being able to breathe properly or easily, especially when lying flat. Upon going to urgent care, I was told that I had a small amount of fluid on my left lung. This led a three month fall into a dark hole of worry, as the common causes of fluid on the lung are serious: congestive heart failure, a pulmonary embolism, or the appearance of lymphoma, just to name a few. My doctor sent me to the emergency room which ruled out these serious conditions. Though I kept getting better, no one could find a cause. It took five weeks before I could sleep lying flat again.

In early March, I went to a pulmonary specialist to follow up. He was very kind and a thorough listener. After many questions, he brought me beside him to look at all my medical films through the years. Then, he quietly said, “I don’t think you ever had fluid on your lung. The abnormal shape of your left lung is the result of scar tissue from your rib surgery thirty years ago.” His best guess was that I contracted something viral that had passed its course.

The Spirit of Giving

spiritofgiving The Spirit of Giving

For 11 months out of the year, we focus our energy on working, raising the kids, maintaining our relationships – both romantic and platonic, and trying to live as balanced a life as possible.

In the midst of juggling all of these responsibilities, we go through periods of neglecting and/or feeling neglected by our significant others; feeling under-appreciated by our immediate family; emotionally and physically distanced from our closest friends; disappointed with what’s going on at work; and disconnected with the most important person of all: ourselves.

Between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, we find ourselves adding time, energy and money exponentially to all the people we didn’t get to spend as much time with as well as the ones who are the most important. We celebrate the season with countless holiday parties, grab bags and Secret Santa gifts. Ugly sweater parties and “catch up” drinks with friends we rarely get to see.

Rejuvenate tips to get your life back on track and out of the nitty gritty of life's activities

girls-laughing-at-the-street-picture-id637812946 Rejuvenate tips to get your life back on track and out of the nitty gritty of life's activities

We seem to realize over time that, every few days we need to rejuvenate in order to keep our lives on track. The environment, our lifestyles, our relationships, our day to day nitty gritty activity, they all seem to take a toll on us. We need to re assess everything that is going on within us and around us.

Once we have done this initial assessment, then we need to plan on how we spend our time. The key factor here is, how we commit our time so that nothing is wasteful. We are intrinsically being true to ourselves and to the world around us.

COMMITMENT WITHIN

Stress only accumulates when we are giving too much of ourselves to the world around us. We need to know how to balance ourselves. Our commitments should be within the boundaries of our own inherent temperaments.

Each one of us is born with a certain nature which is inherent within us. We need to constantly keep in touch with ourselves, to be aware of our own inner level of awareness.

INTRINSIC SELF AWARENESS

This will control the unnecessary use of our mind stuff on petty tasks that did not require our attention, and give us unnecessary uncalled for stress.

5 Holiday Survival Tips For Sensitives

new-years-party-picture-id897335438 5 Holiday Survival Tips For Sensitives

Here we are! The “almost” end of the calendar year, stepping into the last month of 2018 and winding down to regroup again for 2019. This is holiday party- gift-giving- peppermint schnapps snorting- eggnog and cookies snuffling- too much of everything time etc. etc. And, even if you are all gung-ho for the festivities, if you are a highly sensitive person, or an empath this is not the easiest energy for you to manage.

What? You don’t like to be at the mall surrounded by crowds of people grabbing for sale mittens and toaster ovens and that wrong cologne you thought your other half liked? It’s true some people can handle the holiday rush but others- not so much!

If you are like many sensitive people, going shopping amongst a throng of busy frantic people might be emotionally and energetically debilitating. And, because sensitive people have porous boundaries, turning into sponges and soaking up the energy of the world whether you can see it or not could make even going to the grocery store a huge anxiety event. Ever walked out of a store because you got too overwhelmed by all the stuff? I have to say even at the quietest times of the year I still can’t handle the big home specialty store (starts with an “I” and ends with “kea” hint hint) well. I always have to have a nap after the hours of hypnotic Swedish named gadgets turn my brain to mush and because I need to clear off the energy of the shoppers that feel like invisible invaders creeping under my skin with feelings that are unlikely mine own. What on earth? Whose yucky energy did I pick up in the sofa section? OMG, I got lost following the floor arrows.

Stress Relievers for the introvert

iStock-486184768 If you know how to deal with your own emotions, you will naturally respect the other person's boundaries.

Am I shy of being myself or am I wary of projecting who I am truly from within?

Is social acceptance such a huge issue with me that it makes me wear a mask all the time?

Keeping up appearances does inevitably take a toll on us. These are questions we need to constantly keep asking ourselves. There are answers we are constantly seeking. We need to first and foremost accept our ourselves, if we are seeking true happiness. We need to not be embarrassed about feeling differently from the crowd.

SOCIAL CONFORMITY

We normally just remain in an agreeable mode, just going along with the tide.
We can sense an inner sense of rebellion but we tend to quieten that voice as a sense of social conformity exists at a very high level within us.

ASSERTIVENESS

This can actually be explained as an ability to express oneself, to not allow our inner selves to be inhibited. To be appropriately open and honest. To project one's own persona objectively.

This feeling also comes to us with an increased feeling of self awareness, due to honest self acceptance.
To some people assertiveness comes naturally, but with some, those who are more shy and inhibited, it can be a learned skill.

Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper: The Power of Coming Together

africanamerican-yoga-instructor-talking-to-diverse-group-sitting-on-picture-id922482728 The Power of Coming Together

“Love and kindness are never wasted. They always make a difference. They bless the one who receives them, and they bless you, the giver.” — Barbara De Angelis

The other day, I woke up to a text from my friend Matthew DiGirolamo.

Matthew and I worked together for many years. He’s a bright and creative writer and thinker, so I pay attention when he sends me a message.

Matthew said: “I think we should create an ‘Inner Peace Corps.’ Our world is in a mental and emotional health crisis and I feel like we need a corps of therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, spiritual teachers, meditation coaches, etc. to be organized in a massive and coordinated volunteer effort. In times of tragedy and grief, they can help people process their pain, trauma, grief, and stress, and help them connect to their core emotions in a healthy way.”

Is the World Over-Whelming You?

shocked-young-woman-looking-at-laptop-screen-at-work-desk-picture-id870828730 Is the World Over-Whelming You?

Is the world around us getting to be too much to handle? You only have to watch television or read the many feeds on social media to see that there's so much going on around the world. Extreme weather conditions, drama in politics, people losing their lives from many different reasons, homes being destroyed by fires or nature taking a turn for the worse. It seems to be getting too much to take in and for some, people are scared and nervous.

When this happens, I always advise people to pull away from the news and social media, at least for a while. By doing so, you're not pretending there's nothing happening, or choosing to ignore it! What you're actually doing by pulling back is: you’re remembering who and what you are and acknowledging that you're made of soul energy. You're a soul that comes with a body ... not a body that comes with a soul. You are a soul first, and stronger than you could ever imagine! And yes! One person can make a difference!

How to be the master of your own destiny

woman-relaxing-at-home-holding-a-coffee-mug-picture-id877068336 How to be the master of your own destiny

Life can be so very blissful, once we realize that we are the masters of our own destiny. It is only when we allow stress to overwhelm us that bliss starts waning from our lives and fear takes over. How to banish this fear so that we can claim our true identity is what I'm going to talk about today.

BE THE MASTER OF YOUR OWN DESTINY

By eliminating fear you start sending positive signals to your mind and body. Once this begins to happen, our "Being" naturally settles into a happiness mode and then bliss returns.

We basically need to control our thoughts and not allow them to get negative. This level of self mastery is essential, and this is what leads to a powerful individual being.

How To Deal With Stress and Find Peace ( Video )

woman-bathing-at-the-retro-bathroom-picture-id895605810 How To Deal With Stress and Find Peace ( Video )

Have you ever felt so stressed out and overwhelmed?

Perhaps you were dealing with so many things, handling so many responsibilities, or facing an important deadline.

The feeling of overwhelm happens in these situations:

  • You place your attention in the future and experience the stress of what might possibly happen, in the present.
  • You project into the future and create a negative future fantasy about what might go wrong but hasn’t yet.
  • You think of everything that you need to do all at once, and it’s overwhelming.
  • You focus on all the things that are not in your control.

Stressed About Your Future? Let Go of Certainty and Control

pensive-lonely-young-woman-sitting-on-beach-hugging-her-knees-and-picture-id664047240 Stressed About Your Future? Let Go of Certainty and Control

Like everyone these days I can fall prey to the stress goblins. I typically am pretty chill but during the recent US elections (since I was just in the states) I really got infected by the fear and anxiety about ‘WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN?” Oh I know, I’m supposed to have the conscious Universe on speed dial but I fall asleep at the wheel in stressful moments too. Yep, I teach what I need to be reminded of.

How do you react when you’re in the midst of uncertainty and not knowing what’s going to happen next? Do you try to plan, scheme, strategize, and control, all the while driving yourself crazy? Or, do you do what you need to do and then let go the results and cultivate faith in the Divine, faith in the uncharted map yet to be discovered?

Meditate your stress away!

tired-woman-housewife-in-stress-meditates-in-lotus-yoga-pose-in-picture-id841333454 Meditate your stress away!

Meditation is is what many people associate with Spirituality and may be considered old fashioned to the very modern thinking individuals who do not want to identify with it.

I personally feel that it is an age old practice, that may or may not be spiritually aligned, but is actually one of the best ways of relieving stress.

Our bodies are experiencing stress situations all through the day in various forms. They are automatically geared to the "fight or flight" response. Constantly dealing with our own inner emotional self can be very self damaging, both in terms of mind and body. We need a technique that will counter the harm done to us by our stress levels.

How to Balance Stress and Experience More Joy

work-life-balance-choices-picture-id469763608 How to Balance Stress and Experience More Joy

Creating a balance with stress should be our ultimate aim and desire in life. As most of the activities in our lives are so dependent on our reactive state to our own personal stress levels. Of course we cannot completely eliminate stress from our lives, as a certain amount of stress is essential for a balanced lifestyle, and completely eliminating stress would lead to a "couldn't care less" attitude. The most effective balance to stress management would involve ways and means of minimizing the stress we encounter in life. The best would be to create an adequate mixture of thought patterns and behaviors that minimize stress.

CUTTING STRESS

This is by far the easiest solution to effective stress management. Once we understand our own stress patterns, we need to make a conscious effort to eliminate them.

How you are 'wired' to react to stress?

depressed-woman-eats-cake-picture-id919103280 How you are 'wired' to react to stress?

Since we know that stress is an individual capacity, it is a response that varies from individual to individual, we also need to realize that this happens because people are "wired" to react differently to stress. Each one of us is secreting different levels of stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol in the same situation. This tendency of secreting these special hormones can change from time to time.

If you are a person who is specially sensitive to stress, it is important for you to try consciously to maintain a low stress lifestyle.

Today I am going to address the problems of over sensitive individuals, whose stress response remains very high. It has been observed that highly stressed individuals seemingly need more food than others. Their requirements of carbohydrates is also much higher than others. They feel very low on energy if they are consuming lesser carbohydrates. These are people who are releasing high levels of cortisol in response to stress, than most other people.

Managing your Stress Triggers

stressed-businesswoman-meditating-at-meeting-with-diverse-employees-picture-id923039638 Managing your Stress Triggers

Stress is a common factor amongst people from various walks of life. We cannot say for sure, which strata of society will be targeted most by this culprit. There are different types of stress and different types of people . Of course reactions to stress vary from person to person. Some people are more reactive to stress than others.

The body's stress response also varies from person to person. People have various triggers. The body is more responsive to a perceived stress trigger rather than an actual one. Some people may calm down easily, others could take a long time to settle down.

In Times Of Crisis

house-with-white-picket-fence-picture-id147749872 In Times Of Crisis

I just returned from lecturing at Tilton School, the NH school I attended as a student during my high school years and where my dad taught for nearly four decades. Being there now, talking with students and teachers, gave me a new perspective on the problems we face: climate change, US politics, international relations, gender issues, global poverty, and many more. I also was reminded that at Tilton I received an education that opened me to critical thinking, and I saw that the school continues to do that for students today.

Among the most important lessons I learned at Tilton that forever shaped my life: We humans have survived many crises; culture and history are changed by the written word – perception – more than by the gun and sword; and it is imperative for us always to explore the truths behind the “facts.”

As I wandered around campus this past week, I came upon a photograph of my dad outside his old classroom. The accompanying acknowledgement of his contributions to the school reminded me of his long view of history. I sat down in a nearby chair, opened my computer and wrote:

During troubled times, like the ones our country – our world – is experiencing, we may take comfort in the knowledge that we’ve staggered close to the brink before, and pulled back.

Mindfulness and embracing your own reality

young-woman-trail-runner-open-arms-on-sunrise-seaside-picture-id896690574 Mindfulness and embracing your own reality

Allowing ourselves to wallow in the past or the future is the favorite game of the human mind. This constant yo yo situation is a source of a new level of stress, beyond the existing stress level in your life. There are many ways our mind strategizes in order to manage the stress in our lives, yet at most times stress continues to nag at us.

This is like a warning to take charge of our lives and begin to focus on our lives in a more specific way. The important thing is for us to realize that it is imperative to live in the present moment.

POSITIVE CHANGE

This is only possible if we accept our present condition, understand it, realize its impact on our state of mind and our health, and also our power to be able to change this.

Stop chasing illusions and find lasting happiness

enjoying-carefree-time-picture-id909062252 Stop chasing illusions and find lasting happiness

Happiness and virtue compliment each other, the happiest people have definitely conquered the art of living life in a de-stressed zone. Tranquility of the mind and happiness go hand in hand. It is only when we over commit ourselves to the external that we allow stress, a space to build itself up.

Humans of today have lost themselves to the external world. Meaningless values have gained priority over the true meaningful nuances of life. Chasing material things and living up to the neighbors way of life has become the accepted norm, and living in an anxiety ridden scenario is perhaps considered just "normal".

Effective Stress Management to Help You Keep Mentally Strong, Emotionally Healthy

managingstress Keep Mentally Strong, Emotionally Healthy
Stress is unique to every individual. What could be stressing one person, could be completely non-stressful for someone else. This would also mean the strategies one uses as stress relievers for one person would not work with another. We need to understand the individual psyche of an individual to provide him with the correct guidelines as help.

 THE BEST GOAL

Since stress comes to us in various types, the ways of handling it would also vary accordingly. We need to have a clear distinction in our minds of the types of stress we are handling and find strategies to deal with it accordingly.

EUSTRESS OR POSITIVE STRESS

This type of stress actually leads to excitement and exhilaration in our lives. Life would be very dull if stress did not exist. So it is actually an essential ingredient in our lives.

 CHRONIC STRESS

In this case, the body remains in a constant ' fight or flight' response mode. The body is constantly triggered to get away from the situation. This needs to be dealt with since it affects the body in serious ways. It leads to diseases like diabetes, B.P. heart disease and many more. We need to see first what are the symptoms of stress and then see how they can be avoided and dealt with.
