Look Out for One Another

There is so much fear ricocheting around the globe now. Fear of the deadly coronavirus and fear of disease and dying. Basically, fear of survival. This survival-based fear is embedded deep in our cellular memory as a species on this planet; it is a powerful force affecting everyone. Our collective consciousness holds the emotional residue of every event—wars, famine, pandemics, natural and man-made disasters, etc.—and all that is coming up to be released so that we can reach a new planetary balance. Mostly we aren’t aware of the rebalancing yet, but it is happening. As the virus spreads, we feel both present and cumulative fear, as well as other strong emotions like sadness, anger, or panic.

Beach Closed: No Lifeguard on Duty

Several years ago we were vacationing on the insanely beautiful island of Capri in Italy.

One afternoon we went for a walk, searching for a beach, to take a swim in the refreshing, sparkling Mediterranean sea.

We eventually found one and hiked down to a sweet little cove with a sandy beach jammed packed with men, women and children, in all shape and sizes.

As we waded into the water, I noticed a small canoe-like boat that was painted red and on the side were the words, in big block letters, Salvatore.

My first thought was,

“I wonder who Salvatore is and why does he need his name so boldly on the boat?”

And, even though I don’t speak Italian, I soon figured out that it Salvatore wasn’t some man’s name but rather it means “Savior,” and that this was a boat used by lifeguards.

As all of us navigate through these scary and difficult times of the COVID-19 virus, it’s becoming clear that there aren’t enough lifeguards right now, and it’s really up to us to figure out how to rescue ourselves and our loved ones.

The Heart of Peace

During challenging times, such as the one we are currently experiencing, it is often quite difficult to remain calm and centered. Fear and anxiety dominate the collective consciousness, and we start to slide into negative thinking and feelings of overwhelm. We forget that at our core is unshakable calm and peace.

Overcoming The Fear

There is so much fear right now. Can you feel it?

A lot of people are struggling right now; struggling with the fear of the virus, the fear of getting infected, fear of losing someone close to them, the fear of contaminating others. But beyond the virus itself there is also the fear of isolation, the fear of loss of income or loss of a job, the inability to take care of your family, and the great fear of what the future now looks like.

So how is this fear affecting us?

It is infiltrating our systems. The level of fear is so high right now it has become toxic to our way of thinking, our actions, our words, and our energy.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not negating that we have to be safe and take the necessary precautions, especially those of us with a weak immune system. Caution is SO IMPORTANT right now in dealing with conflicts in front of us.  But when precautions come from fear instead of self-care, it activates chaos which in turn spreads and grows.

Through all of this, my  spirit has strongly guided me to say something to you as we are all facing circumstances that we’ve never faced in our lifetime. I feel called to speak on the tools we all possess to overcome the fear that’s weighing heavily within us and around us.

The Habit of Fear

Weeks ago, I was awoken in the middle of the night by coyotes just outside our house. They paused their trek long enough to loudly share a secret. One call, in particular, kept me awake. It sounded like spooky maniacal laughter. The next day I asked the dogs if they understood the message.

This morning there were flash flood warnings, rain, and lightning storms. I waited for a break in the storm before I headed up the hiking trail. I wore sandals because I needed to feel closer to the Earth. Supreme (my trail pup) and I slowly walked and splashed our way up the empty trail enjoying the mud and water in the washes. The rain brought out sweet and earthy smells from the plants and the birds were loudly sharing their insight. We could hear the coyotes far away. At the top, I took a picture of myself enjoying the clouds and open space. On our way down the mountain, we began to run into other people.  It was so good to share a moment of peace and happiness; a wonderful connection.

The Most Dangerous Virus

Many people are speaking now and frequently about fear – of the political situation, unstable markets and weather, and now, a virus. Concern about the virus is now surpassing the other fears that frightened parts of our personalities put on inner display daily for us, if we are willing to look at (experience) them instead of distracting ourselves with food, work, sex, obsessions, and addictions. As we take these inner displays seriously and begin to explore them, a surprising discovery becomes observable, then noticeable, then unavoidable – the most invasive virus that we can experience today is fear. It is contagious, spreads quickly, and dangerous. It puts our ability to give the gifts that we were born to give at risk, and a life without giving them is a life of emotional pain, psychological pain, physical pain, every kind of pain.

There is no vaccine against fear, but there is a way to be healthy again if you become infected: Create authentic power. Frightened parts of your personality generate pain (you are infected when this happens) and loving parts of your personality relieve you of it when you cultivate them repeatedly (you become healthy again when this happens).

Being Resilient During Coronavirus

During times like this, it’s natural to feel afraid, anxious, or threatened. The brain has evolved to react quickly to threats, and it’s easy for there to be a sense of helplessness associated with problems that appear far beyond our control.

But being consumed by fear causes wear and tear on the body, which actually undermines your safety. That’s why it’s so important to look for ways to be effective and express our agency, even if it’s only through how we choose to think about things.

Below you’ll find suggestions and resources for how to do just that during this challenging time. Please share this page widely. These resources are free for all.

Be Here and Be Calm

Some call our current situation a pandemic.

I call this era in history “The Great Calm”

The “Great Depression” in the 1930’s sparked a wave of fear and scarcity.

The “Great Calm” happening now is a wave of Peace. A worldwide harmony, far beyond anything ever experienced.

My contribution to the Great Calm is the Harmony Refresh.

A Heartful Harmony Refresh is a simple skill with three easy steps,
• feel your physical heartbeat
• be aware of your breath
• relax your body and settle into calm

As the world slows down and stops to pause, we will be able to amplify our personal experience of Harmony, reduce fear and increase calm in the world!

How to Stop the Fear Virus

I’m sure you’ve noticed no matter where you live in the world that a great big inconvenient and temporary change is upon us. Certainty is a scarcity and everything is swirling in a vortex of unpredictability.

We’ve all become susceptible to a virus … but not just the one in the news. Sure we all know about that one and there is tons of good information—a mix of medical and common sense about how to deal with Coronavirus (COVID-19). But what about the Other Virus?

Think about it. COVID-19 is not just a medical emergency affecting our bodies. It’s a symbol of something deeper. The more powerful other virus I’m talking about is a thought virus that didn’t come from a foreign country. It rises up through our primitive fear and panic and takes its shape in separation, expresses in fear and hatred of the “other”, and conjures nightmares of scarcity.

This thought virus causes more damage than the one that spawned it.

Love or Fear

So here we are, a time like no other we have ever experienced. Humanity is living out the key choice point of our lifetimes: love or fear. Do we succumb to escalating apprehension about a global virus and slam the doors to our hearts? Or do we stand firm in the belief that love and trust are the defining energies of life on Earth and that keeping our hearts open is the most important choice we can make in our lives? Seems to me that is why we were born, why we all incarnated at this time in the history of our planet. To make that choice and live it completely. To come into full awareness of ourselves as love at our core.

Turning Toward Fear with RAIN

Adapted from Tara’s new book –
Radical Compassion: Learning to Love Yourself and Your World with the Practice of R.A.I.N.

In a far-off land, word spread far and wide of a holy man with magic so powerful it could relieve the most severe suffering. After seekers of healing traveled through the wilderness to reach him, he’d swear them to secrecy about what was next to pass between them. Once they took the vow, the holy man asked a single question: What are you unwilling to feel?

Learning to directly face anxiety and fear with the RAIN meditation—Recognize, Allow, Investigate, and Nurture—gives you a pathway to inner transformation and a fearless heart.

What If Corona Virus Was A Wake Up Call?

What you focus on expands.

If you indulge the fear in your life, it will only grow and consume you.

Fear is itself a virus that has plagued mankind for thousands of years.

Indulging in fear and allowing oneself to spiral into panic is part of what will lower your immune system. We must be vigilant to not allow ourselves to indulge our fear.

Do not let yourself be controlled by whatever media wants you to be afraid of this season.

There will always be something: Corona Virus. SARS. Stock Market crashing. Swine Flu. The current government. Etc.

I am certainly not saying ignore fear, or live in denial of situations that need your attention. We must face them courageously with total awareness and intention.

So what if Corona Virus was an opportunity to put your spirituality into practice and live your meditation? To observe where your attention goes and to be a master of your own mind?

How to Forgive Yourself

Are you your own worst enemy? Do your regrets and pains run through your mind like a broken record? Are you still beating yourself up for saying the “wrong” thing, getting a parking ticket last month, or eating that tub of ice cream last night? Do you know how to forgive yourself?

There is so much information about the healing powers of forgiveness but do we take the time to forgive ourselves? Of all the emails I’ve received from my audience over the years, self-forgiveness and how to practice it has been in the top 5 of all topics. And, it seems that almost every reading I’ve done, especially mediumship touches on something that the person has to forgive themselves for.

Here’s a great question to think about:

What if you treated your most cherished friend just as you treated yourself?

The Power Of Mistakes

“All mistakes are simply the ego’s misinterpretation of reality.”

We’ve all made mistakes at some moment, things we wish we hadn’t done or had done differently. Sometimes we carry the shame or guilt of what we perceive as mistakes, and we beat ourselves up. Take a listen to this episode and learn how to let go of this notion of right and wrong, and discover the profound freedom in realizing you can never make a mistake.

Some Questions I Ask:

  • What is life seeking to unfold and express beyond your ego attachment?
  • What if more happened when you just allowed it to happen?
  • What if life was seeking to give you so much more?
  • What would you do if you couldn’t make a mistake? Where would you go? Who would you speak to? What risks would you take?

In This Episode You Will Learn:

  • What real freedom really means.
  • The definition of ‘making a mistake’.
  • The unexpected benefits of standing still when you don’t know what to do.
  • What to do when things aren’t flowing in life.

How To Heal The Fear Of Getting Hurt Again

Are you putting off opening to another relationship for fear of getting hurt again?

You’ve been hurt over and over in your relationships, and now you are hesitant to seek a relationship for fear of getting hurt again. You might be asking, as many of my clients do, “How do I overcome my fear of being hurt again in a relationship?”

It’s important to understand that there are two kinds of hurt.

  • The heartbreak that comes from someone being unloving – lying, betraying you, being angry or judgmental, suddenly ending a relationship, and so on.
  • The hurt feelings that come from what you are telling yourself and how you might be judging yourself. Are you telling yourself things like, “What did I do wrong?” “How could I have been so stupid as to believe him (or her)?”

Healing involves learning from and lovingly managing both kinds of hurt.

What I learned in Puppy Class

After our big poodle Ringo died, we had one very sad, little poodle dog in Alaska.  We decided It was time for her to make the trip to Arizona.  We hoped that a busier house and the warm sun would help her spirits lift.  She had come into our lives at eight weeks old, a rescue from Fairbanks, Alaska.  My favorite name for her was Baby Dog, even in her adult years.  She loved people and our dog Ringo, but wasn’t so sure about most other dogs.

I wanted to find a companion for Baby Dog to grow old with.  I also wanted a dog that could be my trail pup.  I choose the name Supreme, before we knew when or how a new dog would enter our life.  I loved the name Supreme because it reminds me of our connection to all the good and lovely things in life.  I imagined that every time I called Supreme, I would be connecting to the wonderful, spiritual richness life has to offer.

I found a male poodle puppy that would hopefully become Baby Dog’s best friend and my trail partner.  On his second day with our family, my son and I walked and mostly carried him on my favorite trail. The next day I took him for a wellness check.  I was told he needed to stay in our home and yard exclusively until he reached 16 weeks old.  After his last Parvo vaccination Supreme would be free to leave our home.  I was disappointed, but put off puppy class and trail walks until he was safe.

Transformation Is Possible - It Is Already Here

The one thing in life that never changes is change, or so people say. But in reality we all experience a struggle between accepting change and resisting it, trying to make things different and yet feeling an anxious need to keep things the same. This struggle is what makes personal change so difficult. We can’t make up our minds once and for all how we feel about changing.

If change is so difficult, how can there be personal transformation, upon which the whole movement of human potential is based?  It takes vision and commitment to believe that such a thing is even possible. Most people have mixed feelings about how their lives are going. “Taking the bitter with the sweet” is an old saying in English dating back to the 13th century, but it expresses a universal experience in every society.

Welcome Truth's Light and Make Everything Right for You

Have you ever seen rage in yourself? Generally, we don't want to see certain states within us because we've been conditioned to think of them as being morally "wrong" for us. We don't understand that these dark states are part of an interior world that can be changed when the light of awareness is shined upon them.

What happens when we see things about ourselves that we don't want to see?

In order to avoid looking at itself, the mind will seize on the rage it has seen, and it will try to explain it. It will take the initial darkness, the negative energy, and because it seems to be basically out of control, the mind will try to make of it something that it can deal with. When we live from a nature that does not want to see its "self," then there's no chance that this level of self, this nature, can ever change. When we hide from ourselves the way we feel, the only thing that we're accomplishing is the assurance that these feelings will return again... only more of them! It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: we condemn and doom ourselves by being afraid of the darkness in us. We have one thing to do with our own states, and that is to see them as they are, to catch the part of us that's afraid of being what we've just seen, and to stop trying to hide anything anymore... because we're on this earth to learn.
