Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: For George

Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: For George

What I love about you most

is how you become what you

care for. You are eager to begin,

but in no hurry to leave. And so,

when you offered to build a bookcase

in which my tall wooden Ganesh can

look over me as I dive into the ancient

swirl of secrets that are only secret

because we refuse to become what

we care for—it made me love you more.

It took many seasons and you shared

every step, from the soft pencil design

to taking off my closet doors to make

sure the dream would fit. Then, the

list of materials and the choice of a

proper light, so that every time I’d

turn, I could see Ganesh bow to the

unbendable truth that what’s in the

way is the way. For months, we dis-

cussed the grain of wood, the number

of shelves, the placing of Ganesh like

truth at eye level, the curve of molding

that would crown the ancient god who

I have come to trust as much as I trust

you. The walnut now holds my books

hauled up from the deep. And while

I work hard to see what waits beneath

the masks we cling to, the precision of

your care holds everything in place.

A Credit to Humanity - Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” —Jackie Robinson

I've Been Thinking...

I’ve found myself struggling to keep up with all that’s been going on lately. It seems like just when I read one breaking news piece, a hundred more come my way. Solving The Mystery Of “I”

Solving The Mystery Of “I” - Deepak Chopra MD

If you have ever sat down and seriously asked, “Who am I?” you’ve done something few people ever get around to. To seriously ask the question implies that you don’t already know the answer, and everyone does—or thinks they do. We use the word “I” all the time without finding any mystery to it. ‘I” is the identity that points to you, the individual. ‘I” is the skin-enclosed ego in the body you see in the mirror. “I” is the separate mind that makes you uniquely different from all the other people who walk around with their own version of “I.”

Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: To Go Beyond

Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: To Go Beyond

You ask, “How can I hold on?”
I remember being forced to let
go, to let the torrent take me
beyond all I could imagine.

You ask, “Are we doomed to
repeat our mistakes?” I only know
that when exhausted I could finally
accept that we are privileged to
have more than one chance
to come alive.

You ask, “Why is it all unbearable?”
I want to rock you until you under-
stand that the dark is there
for light to find its purpose.

You ask if I have anything to say.
And I touch my forehead to yours,
hoping something in all that is un-
sayable will skip like a stone along
the waters of the One Mind.

A Question to Walk With: Describe something in your life that feels unbearable. How are you living with it?

Two Degrees Makes All the Difference

Two Degrees Makes All the Difference - Maria Shriver's Sunday Paper

“And now that you don’t have to be perfect, you can be good.”  —John Steinbeck

I've Been Thinking...

“Preach the gospel at all times. Use words only when necessary.”

I have heard that message echoed in church many times, but I share it with you this morning because I believe it is especially pertinent today.

Spreading good news—being a messenger of what’s good in the world—is something we can all be doing today. Think about it. We don’t even have to speak or write something to spread love, compassion, kindness, or goodness. It’s all about how we show up in the world. It’s all about our actions and how we make people feel.

Are you a messenger of hope, love, and good news? Or are you stuck in a cycle of negativity and doom, pointing fingers and spreading bad news?

Is Your Mind on Overdrive?

Is Your Mind on Overdrive?

The mind can be a useful assistant, helping you to organize your life and complete tasks. It can also be a nag, constantly bothering you with worries and reminders. If not balanced with the calming energy of the heart or the breath, the mind can run amuck, always on high alert, looking for lists to make and problems to solve. Caffeine, in the form of coffee or tea, can exacerbate this. Meditation and deep slow breathing are helpful for slowing the mind down. This takes consistent practice, however. Meditators sometimes struggle to control their thinking instead of allowing thoughts to just pass through and disappear into emptiness. The mind can rebel by frantically running a commentary something like this: “What are you doing?! Stand up! Close the window. Take your vitamins. Make a grocery list. Do the laundry. Don’t just sit there!” Often lists will start forming in your head, and the mind will urge you to write them down immediately lest you forget. It requires an ongoing commitment to peace in order to relax your mind into accepting slow, quiet breathing and empty mental space. Being instead of doing.

The Importance of Financial Freedom in Life

The Importance of Financial Freedom in Life

Creating financial freedom is an area I thrive in helping people achieve because ultimately, it offers the power of choice. It provides flexibility and the ability to live a life you love, doing the things you love. The importance of financial freedom extends far beyond the numbers in your bank accounts, savings and investments. It’s about creating Real Wealth - a profound sense of freedom in all areas of your life. After all, you can be what I describe as ‘rich but empty’ and have all the material wealth, yet still feel a deep sense of unhappiness.

Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: THE INNER LAW

Mark Nepo's Weekly Reflection: THE INNER LAW

That the Universe comes through

your heart is like the sun passing

light through the eye of a needle.

It happens beyond all reasoning.

And though one feather will fall,

many together form a wing, the

way love, not kept to ourselves,

will carry us.

It is a deeper form of gravity,

that only the things that find

each other come alive.

A Question to Walk With: Tell the story of a time when you felt the Universe move through your heart. How did this effect you? Describe your journey of finding others in your life.

This is from my book of poems in progress, The Tone in the Center of the Bell.

Listen to Your Heart

Listen to Your Heart - Maria Shriver
“Listen to your heart. Follow your path. May it be clear, and for the good of all.” —Kumu Sabra Kauka

I've Been Thinking...

As I was watching the news the other night, I listened as the anchors discussed the court appearance of the Highland Park mass murderer. They said he was “completely unfazed“ when he appeared to hear the charges. I paused, took a breath, and thought to myself, “Wow, how can anyone be 'unfazed' these days, much less someone who decided to murder innocent people at a July 4th parade?”

The Return To Wholeness Is What We Need Now

The Return To Wholeness Is What We Need Now - Deepak Chopra, MD

Human beings made a bad bargain when we gave up our wholeness. Every other living creature takes wholeness for granted, meaning that bacteria, ferns, horses, and chimpanzees survive and thrive simply by being who they are—they have no other choice. The material processes, from cell to tissue to organ are the foundation of their existence.

How Karma Yoga can deepen your spiritual practice

How Karma Yoga can deepen your spiritual practice

What is Karma Yoga

Karma yoga derives from the Sanskrit word that means “action or doing” and is based on engaging in selfless acts for others. It is about removing the egotistical question of “what do I receive through doing this?” And about simply acting without focusing on gain or result. Karma yoga is one of the four branches of yoga and is an ancient practice that draws on the law of Karma to help make you a more compassionate and loving person, as well as to make the entire world a happier and kinder place.

4 Ways to Know You Are Growing Spiritually

4 Ways to Know You Are Growing Spiritually - Kute Blackson

1. You start losing interest in “yourself.” You find yourself less and less interested in your story. You know who you really are, you know that you are NOT your story. And as a result your taste for the drama that comes along with it starts falling away. You lose interest in drama. Drama simply gives you a false sense of aliveness. When you are in tune with your real self, you are connected to the source of aliveness, thus you are fulfilled. You no longer need drama as a superficial way to try and feel alive.

2. You become less judgmental. The world we live in is a realm of duality. As you grow spiritually you begin seeing beyond right and wrong. Right and wrong is a perception based on your ego’s conditioning. It’s subjective based on the collective cultural agreement. As you grow spiritually you free yourself from the prison of your identity and you move beyond duality. You start seeing life from a higher perspective. As a result, you are more able to see the whole picture and able to honor each person’s soul evolution. You realize that EVERYTHING is perfect for your own soul’s evolution even if it doesn’t seem that way at first. You may still feel the feelings that arise but are able to see the inherent perfection and not get stuck there.
