Let Thanksgiving Inspire You to Start a Gratitude Practice

There’s something truly heartwarming about the holiday season, when many of us gather with family and friends to celebrate and give thanks. What we may not realize, though, is that there’s no need to limit these warm, joyful feelings to a certain day or time of year.

Research shows us that being grateful can make us happier, and that developing an 'attitude of gratitude' is one of the simplest ways to improve your satisfaction with life.” Now Stanford researchers have found a heightened sense of appreciation is among silver liningsAmericans are experiencing in the pandemic. So why not celebrate gratitude all year long? Let Thanksgiving inspire you to start a daily gratitude practice! Here are three easy tips to get started with.

  1. Keep a gratitude journal. Visit your favorite bookstore or craft store and pick out a journal that inspires you. Keep it by your bedside or toothbrush for easy access. Make yourself write longhand instead of typing on a device, as the physical act of writing has more benefits for your neural health than typing on a keyboard. (But typing is better than skipping the practice!)

  1. Before you go to sleep at night, write the answers to these two questions: A) What did I enjoy today? B) What am I grateful for today?

  1. Then, revisit your gratitude any time you are feeling down. This can mean picking up your journal and writing down new things to be grateful for, or you can simply read through the things you’ve written thus far and remember all the goodness in your life. Use this as a gratitude refresh and reset!

Here’s the good news: There’s no “wrong” way to implement these mindful gratitude practices into your life. Jot down a single word or phrase, write paragraphs, draw pictures – whatever way of expressing feels best to you.

Writing down what you are grateful for or what you were doing when you felt joy will open your heart to more happiness. And if you can recreate the feeling of joy in your body when you remember the activity that you are writing about, you are rewiring your brain for more happiness and resilience a second time from the same joyful activity! With something this simple and effective at your fingertips, there’s no reason not to start improving your experience of life right here, today.

In this compassionate and courageous new guide, Potiker shows you how to find happiness apart from your children’s lives, practice important self-care rituals, rewire your own brain to receive happiness, feel safe and comforted in the midst of the chaos, and listen to your inner critic without letting it tear you down.
