It's easy to forget that we are all perfect in our own design. Sometimes we muck it up with habits and choices that do not serve us.
To thrive on the level of the body requires the support of an optimal functioning physical system. For that, proper diet is required and that means a diet that is suited to your unique needs, situation and location. If you live in the tropics and do hard labor your diet will be quite different from someone living in a polar region who is sedentary. If you are tall and thin naturally, or if you are short and stout your requirements may be different. The same holds true for age and activity levels. Does eating seasonally feel good to you? And your philosophy will affect your diet; are you a carnivore or vegetarian? Some people tolerate caffeine and alcohol and some don’t. Some people can eat late at night and sleep well and others can’t. You are unique.
Why you eat is as important as what you eat. Do you eat to live or live to eat? Do you eat as a form of distraction or eat consciously? Do you diet and binge? Your mental and emotional states are a critical factor in your diet. Do you eat in a rush or calmly and slowly? Do you eat when upset or bring yourself into alignment before eating?
Eat what supports your life force; fresh, organic and natural.
A healthy diet is about balance and support. You must decide if you are eating for the benefit or the pleasure, or a balance. You must decide what you are in alignment with and what supports your life.
To find balance and support in your diet the first step is to bring mindfulness to the action. Many times eating is a stress-relief reaction. When you eat consciously, when you bring mindfulness to diet, you bring motive into the light of awareness and respond in a supportive way to the desire to eat. Bringing consciousness to eating also allows you to appreciate food more and savor its benefits and flavor in a balanced way rather than reactively eating. Turn unconscious eating into a conscious act.
Before you go to the kitchen, before you open the cabinet or refrigerator, before you put food in your mouth become mindful of what you are doing in the present moment. Create a space of awareness before you act.
Bring a level of self-respect, self-love and self-worth to eating. Remember your divinity and support the physicality that supports you being a portal for divinity expressing in the world. Make your motivation be an act of loving kindness to yourself. Experiment eating in silence or eating while being mindful of each bite.
Be accepting and at ease. If you splurge or go off your diet, accept it as part of your remembering and evolution. Self-criticism only expands resistance and expands suffering.
Look into your habits. Do you snack unconsciously when you watch TV? Do you eat too much when you feel stressed? Do you keep M&M’s in a bowl by your desk at work and find it empty at the end of the day?
How do you manage your diet? Find balance with food and exercise. Find balance with your nature. Find balance and acceptance and love of the way you are and your physicality.
